It took two days, a health scare, a rainstorm and a schedule change, but the Cazenovia boys cross country team finally got to run a race in 2020.
The Lakers were supposed to open last Tuesday against Christian Brothers Academy at the Sean Googin Sports Complex, but that got postponed when one of the CBA runners received a positive test for COVID-19.
Then Cazenovia was going to have a Wednesday intrasquad scrimmage before a fierce rainstorm altered those plans, as did a plan to race against Manlius-Pebble Hill as a substitute for CBA.
Things cleared up for the Lakers and Trojans on Thursday, and Cazenovia managed to prevail 21-38 as Jared Smith pulled far away from the rest of the runners, winning in 16 minutes, 15 seconds.
More than two minutes later, Quinn Smith got second place in 18:35, and MPH got two of the next three spots in between Eddie Comeau’s fourth-place 19:40.
Killian Blouin finished sixth in 20:56 as Garrett Lounsbury, in 21:05, finished ahead of Carter Ruddy (22:15) and Dylan Shepard (22:39) in the top 10.
The Cazenovia league meet with CBA is set to get made up on Wednesday, with Bishop Grimes also taking part, though the race against the Cobras is a non-league event. The Lakers will meet Grimes again in a league meet Oct. 21.
Chittenango did race last Wednesday against Bishop Grimes, with the girls Bears prevailing 18-50 and the boys defeating the Cobras 23-37.
A close race at the front among boys runners had Chittenango’s Caleb LeBlac go 13 minutes, 31 seconds to beat out the 13:32 from teammate Sean Morgan on a shortened Chittenango course.
Far behind them, Robert Finger, in 15:48, beat out Alex Brummer (15:52), with Sam Glazier, in 15:55, just ahead of the 15:56 from Tristam LaFountaine and Sam DiGennaro. Wes Tedford, in 16:33, beat out Quinn O’Brien’s 16:42.
In the girls race, Piper Beckwith led the Bears, her time of 17:33 comfortably ahead of the 17:47 posted by runner-up Kiara Waite as McKayla Capeling was third in 18:18.
Edy Livingston finished fourth in 18:27, well clear of the 18:52 from Laura Powers. Alyson Coles finished in 19:15, Lailah Emad posted 19:29 and Baily Burton had a 19:48.
