With a strong and diverse group of athletes, indoor track teams from Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool would bring home a series of medals from last week’s state championship meet on Staten Island.
Inside the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, C-NS freshman Kate Putman would lay claim to a state title when paired in the distance medley relay with Angie Mesa (Westhill), Lexi Bernard (South Lewis) and Camryn Stone (Central Valley Academy).
After Bernard, Mesa and Stone had run their legs to put Section III in contention, Putman provided the anchor leg and pulled away. In 10 minutes, 17.68 seconds, Section III finished well clear of Section I’s second-place 10:21.94.
Putman, having broken all school records in the 1,000-meter run, would take eighth place in that event in a clocking of 2:56.43 as freshman teammate Hannah Boyle broke her own school record in the 600-meter run, going 1:36.78 to land in 14th place overall.
Liverpool’s Jenna Schulz would climb to second place in the 1,500-meter run, her 4:31.98 beating everyone except North Rockland superstar Katelyn Tuohy, who won in 4:20.81.
Also for the Warriors, Amina Sinclair was a top-five seed in the high jump, having cleared 5 feet 6 inches this winter. She topped 5’3” here and finished sixth as Half Hollow Hills East’s Soledad Jean won with 5’8”.
Imahni Sinclair expected to medal in the weight throw, looking to improve upon 48’9 1/2” that she threw this season, and had a top attempt of 47’1” to earn seventh place as, In the shot put, Sinclair was 20th with 34’4”.
Kali Hayes, Liverpool’s school-record holder in the 55-meter hurdles, finished in 8.69 seconds and was 12th overall, missing out on reaching the finals by just 0.13 seconds.
C-NS also had Brooke Blaisdell take part in both the long jump and triple jump. Blaisdell earned 20th place in the triple jump with a top leap of 35’1 ¾”and was 30th in the long jump with 14’8”.
Jalen Graham was in the boys weight throw for Liverpool, having tossed it 59’11” to reach the state meet, and having a top throw of 52’2” here to earn 24th place.
On the boys side for C-NS, there was a presence in several races, from Isaiah Wright in the 55 hurdles to R.J. Davis in the 1,000-meter run along with the 4×200 relay.
Wright finished in 7.96 seconds in the 55 hurdles to gain 17th place and, with Colin Hopkins, Sam Nessel and Josh Adams, got to 11th place in the 4×200 in 1:32.04, not far from the 1:31.71 needed to advance to the finals.
Davis covered the 1,000 in 2:38.55 to gain 16th place as Liverpool’s Carter Rodriguez, paired with Matt Bartolotta (West Genesee), Benjamin Lewis (Oswego) and Haris Brakovic (Utica Proctor), helped Section III finish eighth in the distance medley relay in 9:09.08.
