With strong efforts in back-to-back home games, the Baldwinsville girls basketball team proved again that it had separated itself from everyone in the area Class AA ranks except Cicero-North Syracuse.
The state Class AA no. 16-ranked Bees welcomed Nottingham last Tuesday night, and, led this time by Sydney Huhtala, B’ville topped the Bulldogs 55-43.
Having handled Nottingham 65-44 early in December, the Bees expected a closer rematch and did get it, though in the first half Huhtala’s production keyed B’ville steadily earning a 31-20 advantage.
And the margin kept growing until the final minutes, Huhtala not letting up until she had poured in 21 points, well clear of the 14 points put up by the Bulldogs’ leading scorer, Amaya Williams.
Helping Huthala out, Katie Pascale put in 11 points, while Jordan Roy gained nine points and Ola Bednarczyk finished with six points.
Now came Friday’s visit from reigning three-time sectional champion West Genesee, the Wildcats quite eager to get even after B’ville topped them 52-40 with a big fourth-quarter push on Dec. 10.
Here, the Bees wouldn’t wait to put WG away, outscoring them 16-7 in the second quarter to break things open and staying in control the way of the way to win by a 54-37 margin.
Aside from Catie Cunningham, who gave the Wildcats 21 points, the rest of the WG roster managed just five field goals, preventing any kind of comeback.
Meanwhile, Huhtala continued to roll, her 17 points augmented by Pascale’s 14 points as Kyrah Wilbur and Mary Young both stepped up to earn seven points.
Now at 15-1 overall, the Bees host Liverpool next Tuesday as part of a girls/boys doubleheader before a Friday-night trip to Henninger.
