Though it has made tremendous strides as a collective program, the Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA wrestling still has to look up at Fulton, as does everyone else among the Central New York large-school ranks.
The Red Raiders, who were atop the state Division I rankings when they were released late in December, would handle the Rams 61-18 when they met head-to-head last Wednesday night in Fulton.
Fulton had just gone through a classic battle with state no. 4-ranked Spencerport on Jan. 4 and lost, 31-28, so it was quite eager to get back to winning form at J-D/CBA’s expense.
They opened at 160 pounds with back-to-back pins by Camrin Galvin and Ian Bogardus before Tyriq Block, at 182 pounds, got the Rams on the board, pinning Cameron Lugo midway through the second period.
Right after, Muaweyah El-Hindi (195 pounds) got a 58-second pin over Shane Goutermout as Nikoli Sims, at 285 pounds, finished off Jonathon Bell in 93 seconds.
But the Red Raiders won each of the remaining nine bouts, though Matt Dougherty got close at 99 pounds for the Rams, taking a 9-6 defeat to Fred Pagan. Ethan Wells (126 pounds) battled Andru Walts in a 6-1 loss.
A night earlier, East Syracuse Minoa was in action against Auburn, and it did well in the early going, only to see its big lead get away in a 38-36 loss to the Maroons.
Only twice did the Spartans win on the mat, with Michael O’Brien (145 pounds) pinning Jack Bennink in 3:36 and Ali Abudlla, at 170 pounds, getting a 32-second fall over Isaiah Parkman.
Forfeits went to Aslan Abdulla (160), Andrew Crone (195), Conor Todd (285) and Davis Palmer (106 pounds), but Auburn, trailing 36-23, won the last three bouts with two pins plus Brad Boyhan beating ESM’s Ayden Johnston 7-2.
Fayetteville-Manlius met Baldwinsville last Thursday and earned just four victories as it fell to the Bees 57-15.
Liam Malgieri, at 285, got the Hornets on the board, beating Korbin Haney 10-4. Later in the meet, Luke Richter (145) won 7-2 over Liam Fitzgerald, with Sawyer Dereszynski (170) handling Connor Kral 12-6 as Alex Dauksza (160) took a forfeit.
Other bouts were close, but B’ville claimed them, including Abdulrahman Abouelamayem (113 pounds) falling 5-1 to Mason Clark as Kyle Sykes (120 pounds) fell to Max Naples 4-1.
