It was what gymnastics teams from Jamesville-DeWitt/Fayeteville-Manlius and East Syracuse Minoa/Liverpool had worked for ever since last winter, Section III championships on the line.
Last Friday’s sectional meet at Valley Gymnastics climaxed a busy October and ultimately produced four gymnasts who advanced to next February’s state meet – Zoe Potamianos, Rylee Fishkin and Rachel McKean from J-D/F-M, plus Delia Korseniewski from ESM/Liverpool.
Fishkin scored 9.3 on uneven bars to finish fourth in Level I to go with 9.1 on the vault and 9.15 on floor exercise, while Potamianos was fourth on the vault with a 9.3 of her own.
With an all-around score of 36.225, Fishkin took sixth place as New Hartford’s Miranda Smith won with 38.825, which included 9.8 on the vault, 9.75 on uneven bars, 9.65 on balance beam and 9.625 on the floor.
Moving to Level II, Korseniewski was the all-around champion with 35.6, scoring 9.45 on her beam routine and 9.05 on the floor as she added a winning 8.9 on the vault and 8.2 on uneven bars.
Catherine Rizzo won the Level II uneven bars for J-D/F-M with 8.35 Hayden McGinn scored 8.3 on the vault and 8.2 on uneven bars, improving to 8.85 on the beam. ESM/Liverpool’s Madide Crooke had an 8.6 floor routine.
At Level III, J-D/F-M’s Gwyn Botto won the all-around with 30.85, which included 8.45 on the floor and a winning 7.4 on uneven bars. Georgiana Paparo scored 8.25 on the vault to get sixth place.
J-D/F-M had gone through a competitive meet with Central Square last Tuesday night, improving its overall record to 4-1 by defeating the Redhawks 139-131.
Fishkin dazzled with a 9.5 on beam and 9.3 in both uneven bars and floor , winning on each apparatus on her way to an all-around score of 36.2.
McKean’s 34.5 all-around total included a 9.2 beam routine and an 8.2 on the vault, where Potamianos and Rachel Wells both scored 8.3.
Rizzo’s 8.4 on uneven bars put her in third place, while Potamianos scored 9.1 on the floor to finish second to Fishkin as Wells put up a 9.0 floor routine.
