It was a special Wednesday night as the Cicero-North Syracuse boys volleyball team met Fayetteville-Manlius, as once again area boys volleyball sides joined up to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation,
The match itself merely reinforced the Northstars’ place atop the SCAC Metro division as it claimed the first and third sets by equal 25-19 margins and the second set 25-16 in between for the sweep.
Kevin Felasco and Carter Wisely both finished with seven kills and six digs, leading a balanced C-NS front line where Jon Hendry got six kills and three blocks, Dan Seliger also earning six kills.
Working from the back line, Brandon Millias finished with 29 assists, adding three kills and two blocks, helped on defense by Trace LaRobardiere, who got 12 digs as Felacsco earned six digs.
Another special moment came on Thursday night, when Liverpool, who had lost to F-M 25-16, 26-17, 25-20 last Tuesday, continued its comeback season continued thanks to a dramatic five-set victory over the Baldwinsville Bees.
Having lost the first set 25-19, the Warriors were on the brink of a bigger deficit before pulling out the second 26-24 and then controlling the third set 25-16.
Then, just as Liverpool was about to close it out, B’ville rallied, taking the fourth set 26-14. The final set, a race to 15 and to win by two, went back and forth, but at 14-14 the Warriors gained the serve and got the match point to win it 16-14.
Anthony Pezzino led Liverpool with 12 kills and nine digs, while Elliott DeForge had seven kills. Jeremy LaManche gained six kills and Aidan Shoemaker had five kills.
Working the back line, Quinn Moore finished with 31 assists and Jagger Alberici gained 20 digs, Moore adding seven digs and Nolan Feldt picking up six digs.
In girls volleyball, Liverpool emerged victorious from its trip to the Marcellus Tournament, taking that title on Sept. 21. The Warriors claimed first place in pool play, and then, in order, defeated Solvay, Fulton and Jamesville-DeWitt to finish on top.
Yet that success did not carry over into last Monday’s match at Fayetteville-Manlius, where Liverpool was unable to gain a set in a 25-14, 25-17, 25-20 defeat to the Hornets.
Sarah Ayling had 10 kills and four digs, with Kaylah Yarn earning six kills and Veronica DeTota getting four kills to go with her eight assists. Lexi Carfi earned 12 assists as Helen Nash got eight digs.
F-M featured a balanced front line of Anna Wiliams (11 kills) and Harper Stoppacher (10 kills), with Morgan Napier getting 30 assists as Juliana Myagkota (19 digs) and Nina Avery (18 digs) leading the defense.
Cicero-North Syracuse, off to a 5-0 start this season, offered its challenge to the Baldwinsville dynasty last Monday and held up quite well, even though the Northstars lost in four sets to the Bees.
Each of the first two sets was competitive, B’ville claiming them by equal 25-19 margins. Then, in the third set, C-NS grabbed a 25-20 victory, and would push again in the fourth set, even though the Bees claimed yet another 25-19 decision.
Jennifer Carl put together 24 assists and eight digs, with Hannah Mingle playing strong defense and earning 28 digs
Brooke Segars earned nine kills and got 14 digs as McKenna Johnston earned five kills and Aurora Lesinski had four kills. B’ville’s Rileigh Kimball had 27 kills, 10 digs and six aces as Jenna Garvey (32 assists) and Summer McClintic (15 assists) worked on the back line.
C-NS and Liverpool would both play last Saturday in Baldwinsville’s Fall Swing Tournament after the Warriors lost 25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 25-17 to Oswego on Friday, despite 21 assists from Carfi as Sydney Vanterpol and Emma Terzini had six kills apiece, Rowell and Ayling each getting four kills.
In the Fall Swing Tournament last Saturday at Baldwinsville, C-NS reached the Silver division quarterfinals, where it lost in three sets to eventual champion F-M. Liverpool fell to Marcellus in the Diamond division after round-robin play.
