A 3-1 mark while playing four matches on four consecutive days from Sept. 9 to 12 had demonstrated that the Cazenovia girls tennis team possessed plenty of talent and toughness.
Now, after some chance to rest, the Lakers were back in action last Monday afternoon, starting another crowded stretch where it would play four times in five days, all on the road.
It began with Cazenovia going to Mexico and handling the Tigers 6-1 last Monday, with Baylee Pierce pulling out a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 singles win over Juliana Smith as Clare Douglas beat Juliana Hernandez 6-2, 10-8.
Though Julia Knutsen lost, 6-2, 6-4, to Paige Masrouri, the Lakers’ doubles teams of Alex Galle-Nina Royer, Nova Berger-Emma Schwartz and Regan Dauenhauer-Katie Pavelchak each won in two sets. Mae Syre and Emma Thornton overcame a rough second set to beat Amita Druce and Shelby Schumacher 6-3, 0-6, 6-2.
A non-league match with Cicero-North Syracuse on Wednesday, and the Lakers lost, 5-2, to the Northstars, who swept in singles, though Galle and Royer beat Olivia Cerio and Karly Williams 6-0, 6-0. Clare Douglas and Sarah Schwartz beat Eve Campitello and Angel Languaphay 6-2, 6-4.
Back on the court again 24 hours later, Cazenovia was at Pulaski, where it handled the Blue Devils 6-1, the lone blemish coming when Berger won the first set 6-0 against Holly Pacyon, but lost the next two sets 6-2 and 6-4.
But Douglas blanked Amanda Halsey 6-0, 6-0 as the other singles match was forfeited, with new doubles teams of Galle-Schwartz, Dauenhauer-Royer, Sayre-Pavelchak and Kiana Vazquez-Grace Degeih each winning in two sets.
On Friday, Cazenovia went to Homer and topped the Trojans 4-3 entirely due to its doubles teams after Douglas, Pierce and Knutsen each took straight-set singles defeats.
Galle and Royer handled Sienna Haskins and Allison Thompson 6-0, 6-3 as Berger and Schwartz beat Brynne Peck and Charlotte Wallis by those same scores. Sayre and Thornton needed a pair of tie-breakers to get past Natalie Brown and Abby McLaughlin 7-6, 7-6 as Dauenhauer and Pavelchak sewed it up by beating Emily Barber and Madelyn Cotterill 6-1, 6-2.
Chittenango had back-to-back matches of its own, starting last Tuesday against Jordan-Elbridge, where the Bears dominated and did not a single set while defeating the Eagles 7-0.
Anna Rooney had the closest match, in first singles, working past Anisa Bort 7-5, 6-1, while Brooke DiFlorio handled Meghan Whalen 6-2, 6-2 and Delaney Dawkins got a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Wendy Carter.
Brianna Crystal and Keelin Davie won 6-3, 6-1 over Skylar Crysler and Hayley Holland, and that was the least lopsided doubles match. The teams of Riley Ellis-Sarah Lanphear, Abbie Austin-Allison Soulier and Leah Demauro-Jessica Hallock lost just seven games in six combined sets.
Then, with its own battle against Phoenix on Wednesday, the Bears won again, 5-2, with Rooney dropping her singles match to Brielle DeRoberts 6-1, 6-2 as DiFlorio handled Mia Graham 6-3, 6-4 and Dawkins won 6-3, 6-4 over Katelyn Carbonaro.
Though it had to forfeit a doubles match, Chittenango swept the other three, with Demauro and Hallock blanking Kaelyn Cartwright and Sheridan Southworth 6-0, 6-0. Ellis and Lanphear won 6-1, 6-1 over Mackenzie VanAuken and Courtney Worden as Austin and Soulier beat Ella Heckert and Aleesia Lion 6-1, 6-3,
Chittenango would challenge OHSL Liberty division pace-setting Marcellus on Tuesday before facing Homer on Thursday afternoon. Cazenovia’s lone match this week is against Jordan-Elbridge on Tuesday.
