Respect gained from earning back-to-back Section III Class C girls lacrosse titles has paid off for Jamesville-DeWitt with a no. 4 spot in the first state Class C rankings of the spring.
To stay up there, the Red Rams needed to maintain its high level of play, which didn’t prove too difficult last Tuesday as J-D pounded Fulton 22-9.
This was the first time these sides had met since last year’s sectional Class C final, but Fulton had taken lots of graduation hits and had seen its head coach, Drew White, leave for the West Genesee job.
The far more stable Rams would toy with the Red Raiders’ defense throughout the first half, which more than compensated for surrendering a fair amount of goals while building a 16-6 advantage.
Seven different J-D players had multiple-goal outings, led by Ana Dieroff, who scored five times as Lindsay MacLachlan and Kailey McKenna each got three goals, MacLachlan adding two assists.
Riley LaTray, Arysa Lux, Lily Loewenguth and Jordan Archer had two goals apiece, with Chloe Loewenguth and Everly Kessler each getting one goal and one assist. Emily Bobrek also had a goal.
East Syracuse Minoa, who lost to J-D on April 13, rebounded last Tuesday by flattening Oswego 21-2, a game where it hardly let up despite a running clock the entire second half after the Spartans led 13-2 at halftime.
Julianna Barton had four goals and one assist, with Sophia Orlando amassing three goals and four assists. Julia Caruana and Katherine Andrus also had three-goal outings as Emma Biel scored twice. Rileigh White had a goal and two assists and Marissa Drogo added a goal.
It was much closer in Thursday’s game against Central Square, but ESM pulled it out, overcoming seven goals by the Redhawks’ Courtney Fox to prevail 15-11.
Other than Fox, Central Square only had two other goal-scorers, while the Spartans spread things out a bit more as White and Andrus each had four goals, with Barton scoring three times. Orlando got two assists as she and Biel both found the net twice.
That same day, J-D had its own big win over Oswego, prevailing 20-5 with seven different players earning multiple goals, led by Lily Loewenguth, who scored four times to go with an assist.
Dieroff (three goals, three assists) and MacLachlan (two goals, four assists) had matching point totals, as did LaTray (three goals, one assist) and McKenna (two goals, two assists). Archer and Chloe Loewenguth also had two goals, with Kessler and Emma Kesselring earning one goal apiece and Bobrek adding two assists.
Christian Brothers Academy was humbled on its home turf last Tuesday by state Class D no. 5-ranked Skaneateles, who made quite a strong statement in defeating the Brothers 11-3.
The same CBA side that handled Marcellus 10-2 in its previous outing found itself trailing the Lakers 5-0 before the game was eight minutes old, Skaneateles dominating the draw circle and efficient with its scoring chances.
And after Gia Anthony got the Brothers on the board at the 13:24 mark of the first half, CBA didn’t find the net again until Tatum Kohlbrenner and Bella Roberson notched back-to-back goals midway through the second half.
Otherwise, the Lakers stifled CBA, both with aggressive back-line play and a lot of point-blank stops from goalie Ionna Christou, who made nine saves. Grace Dower and Maggie Newton each had three goals, with Olivia Navaroli and Riley Brogan both getting two goals and three assists.
