With its impressive 7-0 start, the Jamesville-DeWitt boys lacrosse team powered its way to no. 3 in the first state Class C rankings of the season, with Christian Brothers Academy at no. 6 and East Syracuse Minoa at no. 10.
Yet of these three, only the Red Rams won last Tuesday, going to Fulton and toying with the Red Raiders on the way to a 22-5 victory that featured eight goals in the first quarter and plenty of more production afterward.
Connor Durkin’s total of four goals and two assists led a diverse group that included Will Davis getting three goals and four assists and Johnny Keib managing his own three-goal hat trick, plus two assists.
Matt Kemmis had two goals and two assists, with Tom Sabatino also converting twice. Pat Murad, Brendan Coyle, Tanner Burns and Josh Greenway each had one goal and one assist, with goals also going to Nick Kemmis, Matt Bradford, Hayden Braun and Jason Waskiewics.
As this went on, ESM went to Oswego, where it expected to dominate against the 1-6 Buccaneers, but instead saw a fourth-quarter lead disappear in a stunning 10-9 defeat.
All looked fine when the Spartans went in front 5-1 after one period, but Oswego didn’t go away, eating into that deficit and then, in the fourth quarter, shutting out ESM and getting three straight goals to pull it out.
Lance Madonna still scored five times, adding an assist, with single goals going to Tim Crouse, Jackson Palumb, Eric Callahan and Luke Rosaschi as Gavin Houghtaling got two assists.
To lead the Bucs’ comeback, Dan Doviak and Ryan Wood each netted three goals, while Carson Colucci got two goals and one assist and Colin Cianfarano recorded 15 saves.
Ironically, Oswego would face J-D next, and well aware of what the Bucs did to ESM , it turned into another Red Rams romp as it poured out more goals in a 21-4 victory.
Up 13-3 by halftime, J-D had Durkin get to a double-digit point total with five goals and five assists. Davis scored four times as Burns, Keib, Murad and Matt Kemmis each found the net twice. Greenway added one goal and one assist.
ESM had its own big win on Thursday, tearing up Central Square 18-4 as it scored seven times in each of the first two periods to bury the Redhawks early.
Crouse led with five goals, with Madonna notching five assists as he and Rosaschi had three goals apiece. Houghtaling had two goals and two assists, with Palumb getting one goal and two assists. Callahan, Nolan Palmer, Mike Kavanagh and Riley Rossignol had the other goals.
Meanwhile, CBA also lost last Tuesday, going to Buffalo and dropping a wild 19-14 decision to St. Joseph’s, the state’s no. 9-ranked Class A team.
The Brothers played on even terms with the Marauders most of the way but found it tough to overcome a 7-3 first-quarter deficit, though Preston Taylor did have six goals and three assists.
Sam Bonacci scored twice, with Ryan Mackenzie and Colin Kelly each getting a goal and three assists. Wyatt Auyer added four assists. Dan Anderson, Josh Hulslander, Joey Matheson and Brackton Bowler also scored.
CBA roared back to form Thursday by smashing Tully 19-4, with 11 different players finding the net by game’s end as Auyer, Mackenzie and Donovan Watson each got three-goal hat tricks.
Kelly and Bonacci were close behind, both scoring twice, with Anderson earning a goal and two assists. Taylor had one goal and one assist as Bowler, Hulslander, Cole Mathews and Greg Wells also converted.
A busy week for CBA concluded Saturday with a visit from Carthage, but the Brothers dominated here, too, amassing a 17-0 lead on the Comets through three quarters before easing up in a 17-4 win.
Mackenzie, with six assists, spread it around to, among others, Bonacci and Taylor, who both got three goals, Bonacci adding two assists. Matheson and Kelly both scored twice, Matheson also getting a pair of assists. Single goals went to Ian Henderson, Donovan Watson and Michael Fallon.
