Late in the week of the April school break, the Chittenango baseball team played three times, starting slowly but putting up 28 total runs in back-to-back victories that followed.
To start with, the Bears faced its Route 5 neighbors from Canastota last Wednesday afternoon, and pitching was the story as Chittenango was unable to get on the board in a 2-0 defeat to the Raiders.
Just 24 hours later, though, the Bears saw its four-game skid finally get halted as its bats sprang to life and it beat Hannibal 15-9 in eight innings for its first victory of the season.
A five-run second inning got Chittenango going, but the Warriors fought back to tie it, 6-6, by the end of the fourth inning. Then it happened again, the Bears going in front 8-6 in the sixth inning, Hannibal pulling even in the bottom of the seventh.
But in the top of the eighth, Chittenango batted around and produced six runs, more than the Warriors could overcome as Tommy McIntosh led the way, reaching base five with two hits and three walks while earning three RBIs.
Ronnie Ince had three hits and drove in two runs, with Maddox Garvey scoring three times. Seth Kimball, Bryce Bishop and Brandon Turner each matched Ince’s two-RBI output as Nick Callahan and Aiden Cavotta also scored twice.
No extra baseball was required for Friday’s game against Mexico, which the Bears claimed 13-5, using five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to overcome a 3-1 deficit as seven more runs in the next two innings followed.
Devon Spaulding pitched five innings and struck out eight, while at the plate he doubled twice and tripled, with Sean Rooney’s pair of hits leading to three RBIs. Noah Schnauffer drove in a pair of runs as Kimball, Bishop, Ince and McIntosh had one RBI apiece.
