In an extreme manner, the Cazenovia and Chittenango girls lacrosse teams got a glimpse at the work both of them would need to do in order to progress up the standings this spring.
Cazenovia visited Marcellus last Tuesday night and lost, 17-3, to the Mustangs, who got five goals from Laura Canny and four goals from Anna Vetsch to pace their efforts.
The Lakers trailed 10-2 by halftime and were unable to recover, with Molly Brown scoring two of the three goals and assisting on the other, by Laura Connor. Grace Rajkowski assisted on one of Brown’s tallies.
Things got a bit better for Cazenovia in Thursday night’s game at Whitesboro, but it still didn’t bring the Lakers much closer to a victory as it fell to the Warriors 16-7.
Only down 7-4 at halftime, Cazenovia had a difficult time containing Whitesboro’s trio of Madison Davis, Samantha DeCondo and Gracie Stuhlman, each of whom scored four times as Davis added four assist and Stuhlman three assists.
Again, the Lakers’ attack depended too much on a couple of players, Brown netting four goals and Rajkowski the other three goals as Kaitlyn Puffer got two assists. Mackenzie Halliday finished with seven saves.
On the same night Cazenovia lost to Marcellus, Chittenango had to deal with reigning state Class A champion Christian Brothers Academy, who took down the Bears 23-5 at Alibrandi Stadium.
Goals were earned by Julia Pynn, Ally Shoemaker, Rhonee Shea Pal, Alyssa Frantz and Julia Graham, with Pynn adding two assists as Shoemaker and Shea Pal had single assists. For CBA, Gracie Britton netted seven goals, with Bella Roberson (five goals, one assist) and Gia Anthony (four goals, two assists) also having big nights.
In Thursday’s 21-6 loss to Westhill, the Bears surrendered 17 goals in the first half. Shea Pal still had two goals and two assists, with Shoemaker and Graham also scoring twice. Ashley Thompson added an assist. Rebecca Gilhooley led the Warriors with four goals and five assists.
As the Bears rested for its game against the Lakers on April 23, Cazenovia would host Jordan-Elbridge on Tuesday as it attempted to break its five-game skid before its own game with Westhill on Thursday afternoon.
