An intense and crowded track and field season has started, and Chittenango already is in good position in its quest for OHSL Liberty American division honors.
After its April 3 opener with Mexico was postponed, The Bears swept both sides of last Tuesday’s meet at Homer, prevailing 106-35 on the boys side and taking out the Trojans 88-44 on the girls side.
Devin Myers won four events in the boys meet for Chittenango. He had a top long jump of 18 feet 10 inches, a first-place triple jump of 38’5” and, on the track, prevailed in the 110 high hurdles in 16.1 seconds and the 400 hurdles in 1:02.6.
Jacobi Dwyer swept all the sprints, going 11.9 seconds in the 100-meter dash to match teammate Kenny Matthews, but then taking the 400-meter dash in 55.8 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 25.6 seconds, which Parker Tedford equaled.
Ersilio Cerminaro chimed by running the mile in 5:01.9 over Dave Gratien (5:05.2) and going 12:17.6 in the 3,200-meter run. Callum Reed threw the discus 91’7” to win that event as Jeremy Waters cleared 5’2” in the high jump.
Matthews paired with Caleb Prenoveau, Nate Lampman and Tristan LaFountaine to win the 4×400 relay in 3:56.8, with the Bears also claiming the 4×100 relay in 49.9 seconds.
McKenzie Dombroski led the Chittenango girls, sweeping the distance races as she went 2:46.8 in the 800 to beat out McKayla Capeling (2:49.2) after she ran together with Chelsea Lamphere in the 1,500-meter run, each posting 5:39.6.
In the 3,000-meter run, Dombroski went 12:00.4 to hold off Lamphere’s 12:01.7 as Dombroski also helped Kiara Waite, Piper Beckwith and Emily Moon take the 4×800 relay in 10:55.3.
Mia Morgillo (18.9 seconds) and Cecily Cummings (20.1) went 1-2 for the Bears in the 100 hurdles, while Brooke Price took the 400 sprint in 1:09 flat. Morgillo added a second title in the shot put with a toss of 22’11 ¼”.
Maryanna Garcia was victorious in the 200 in 28.3 seconds. Price and Moon helped Chittenango run the 4×400 relay in 4:39.9 after Garcia anchored the Bears’ win in the 4×400 in 56 seconds flat.
Delaney Dawkins, part of the 4×100 effort, cleared 4’4” to win the highjump, with Garcia (4’2”) second. Moon had a top triple jump of 31’5” to beat out Marilla Bongiovanni’s 30’1”
Chittenango then hosted the “Relays of Hope” on Friday afternoon, with the boys Bears third in the team standings behind Liverpool and Clinton as the girls tied for sixth place mostly thanks to a win in the 4×800 in 10:25.77.
The boys Bears won the 4×400 in 3:57.20, was second in the distance medley relay in 11:36.82 and third in the 4×800 in 8:47.01, while also finishing fifth in the sprint medley in 4:01.45. Dakota Diable had a second-place shot put throw of 36’11”.
