Long before it warmed up for good, the Cazenovia boys track and field team was demonstrating that it means to go after Onondaga High School League and Section III honors throughout this spring.
In last Wednesday’s season opener at Jordan-Elbridge, the Lakers demonstrated its depth and all-around skill in the course of an impressive 84-57 victory over the Eagles.
Piling up points in field events, Cazenovia had Angelo Annotto throw the shot put 37 feet 5 ½ inches, ahead of teammates Gordon Wester (34’3 1/2”) and Christian Edelstein (33’8”) in a 1-2-3 sweep.
Then another top-three sweep took place in the discus, Annotto’s throw of 112’10” just enough to hold off Kyler Hathaway’s 106’8” as Wester, with a toss of 92 feet, grabbed third place.
Dalton Sevier continued this trend, clearing 5’8” in the high jump and topping 10 feet in the pole vault to match the efforts of J-E’s Derek Quigley and Nathan Williams.
Sam DeLeon won the triple jump with 39’3” and was second in the long jump, going 16’8 ½”. Moving to the oval, DeLeon roared to first place in the 200-meter dash in 23.6 seconds, more than a second ahead of the field.
Moving to the oval, the Lakers’ Jared Smith recorded a mile of five minutes, 4.9 seconds, winning that race over the Eagles’ Lee Jewell (5:09.1) and again topping Jewell when he won the 3,200-meter run in 11:21.2.
Cormac Race was victorious in the 400-meter dash in 53.1 seconds, with Jack Aronson second in 53.9 seconds. Justin Gagnon pulled away to win the 400 hurdles in 1:05.6 as Connor Wilson (1:13.1) was third.
All of this helped to overcome a tremendous performance by J-E’s Marion Quigley, who won the 100-meter dash (11.4 seconds), 110 hurdles (15.6 seconds) and long jump (18’5 ½”), and was second in the triple jump behind DeLeon.
Cazenovia has its home opener Wednesday against Hannibal at Buckley-Volo Field before competing in a meet at Tully on Saturday.
