With a small roster diluted by injuries and other concerns, the Baldwinsville girls basketball team has hung on as well as it could and still did enough to earn a Section III Class AA playoff berth.
But a greater indication of where the Bees stood was the results last week, especially last Tuesday night’s game against Fayetteville-Manlius, where its lack of depth may have prevented a comeback in a 58-46 defeat to the Hornets.
This was the same F-M side B’ville defeated 38-35 a month earlier, but in the rematch the Hornets began to take charge in the second quarter, where it got hot from the field and outscored the Bees 22-14 to lead 34-24 at the break.
Though B’ville hung in there, F-M limited them to seven points in the fourth quarter to prevent any comeback and, overall, got a big effort from Lexie Roe, who had 25 points as Alexis Schneider added 10 points.
No one on the Bees got close to Roe’s production, Megan Brecht leading the way as she got 12 points. Alex Bednarczyk had 10 points, with Sydney Huhtala (who hit the game-winning shot to beat Cicero-North Syracuse a week earlier) adding nine points and Mary Young getting six points.
At Corcoran Friday night, the Bees attempted to compete a regular-season sweep of the Cougars, but this proved difficult, too, as it lost to the Cougars 56-52.
B’ville flew out of the gate, leading 18-10 after one period, and essentially nursed that lead through the game’s middle stages as Huhtala gained 16 points and Bednarczyk 14 points, with Megan Brecht adding eight points. Young and Hannah Mimas had six points apiece.
Still, Corcoran hung in there and, in the fourth quarter, outscored the Bees 18-10 to pull it out, mostly due to a three-pronged attack where Anesha Millhouse got 18 points, Tayhaja Scott got 16 points and Diamond Gilbert adding 15 points.
Monday’s game with Nottingham would end the regular season, with B’ville soon after finding out where it would start the sectional tournament.
