In the books, the Baldwinsville wrestling team’s match against West Genesee last Wednesday night will stand as a 1-0 Bees victory.
This rare score was caused by the fact that, after things were over, the Wildcats found out that it had used an ineligible wrestler in the 195-pound division.
It was a rare mistake, with a rarer outcome. Aside from the fact that the bout at 195 was forfeited to Mike Letizia, the entire score of the match was wiped out. Thus, WG’s 42-33 victory was erased.
Before all this, the Bees found itself unable to win any of the first three bouts, not getting on the board until 182 pounds, when Dom Sposato got a pin over Mike Sarakos in 3:19.
After a forfeit to Luke Eberl at 220 pounds, B’ville got three straight wins in the lighter weight classes, kicked off by Aiden Cali pinning his 99-pound opponent, Sammie Snyder, in just 33 seconds.
Mason Clark piled up points at 106 pounds to defeat Matt Murdock 13-5, and while it was closer at 113 pounds, Max Naples still took a 4-1 decision over Jackson Taetsch.
Had the team score counted, WG would have won because it took four of the last five bouts on the card, the lone exception a 138-pound battle here the Bees’ Cole Accordino beat Eugene Belov 12-8.
Appearing Saturday in the Phoenix Round Robin tournament, the Bees rose to fourth place in the 19-team field with 117 points. Ironically, it was West Genesee, of all teams, grabbing the top spot with 169.5 points, edging Grand Island (166 points) for the title.
Billy Loadwick reached the 285-pound final, only to fall to Newark Valley’s Trentyn Rupert in a second-period pin. Cali met the same fate at 99, reaching the title bout before Chenango Valley’s Trevor Cortright pinned him.
Sposato was third at182, and Eberl, at 195 pounds, earned that same spot by pinning Joey Woodmansee (Newark Valley) in 4:29. Letizia, Accordino and Jaden Prince each had sixth-place finishes.
Following that, B’ville would make the short trip to Liverpool on Wednesday, both sides looking for 2-0 league marks. Then the Bees host its own dual meet this Saturday with Holland Patent, Rome Free Academy, Whitesboro and Owego the visiting sides.
