To this point, no local Division I side had yet got the best of the Cicero-North Syracuse boys volleyball team, though Baldwinsville got close on Sept. 18, pushing things to five sets before the Northstars prevailed.
Now the two met once more last Thursday night at Baker High School, with the Bees having already avenged a mid-September defeat to Fayetteville-Manlius two nights earlier.
This match was in doubt for a while. The Northstars claimed the opener 25-19, but B’ville pulled out the second set 26-24 and was threatening in the third set, too.
However, C-NS won that set 25-22 and then closed it out 25-18 in the fourth as, once more, Trent Caviness contributed on all fronts with 10 kills, 16 assists, four blocks and three digs. Brandon Millias had 18 assists.
Helping Caviness on the front line, Carter Wisely had eight kills and three blocks, with Jake Den Bleyker and Kevin Velasco each earning seven kills and Josh Pickard gaining six blocks to go with six kills.
For B’ville, Thomas Higman got 29 assists, feeding it to Luc Jerome (nine kills), David Cornell and Aidan Priest (eight kills each) as Connor Garvey got five kills and Bradford Doubleday contributed nine digs.
C-NS had, back on Tuesday, swept past Syracuse 25-12, 25-11, 25-7, with Wisely setting a career mark by earning nine aces to go with five kills. Caviness notched 14 assists and nine kills, plus five aces. Dan Seliger added four aces and four kills as Felasco added five kills and Den Bleyker got four kills. Aidan Longley contributed three aces.
This busy week would conclude with C-NS taking on Canisius, from Buffalo, on Saturday afternoon as part of a twin bill where the Crusaders also took on Baldwinsville.
It went five sets, with the Northstars dropping the first two 25-18 and 25-2, only to catch up by winning the third set 25-22 and the fourth set 25-23. Having expended so much in the rally, C-NS had little left in the final set, and Canisius prevailed 15-8.
Liverpool played last Tuesday night against Oswego, who handed C-NS its lone defeat this season. Though it played tough most of the way, the Warriors lost, 25-16, 25-19, 25-19 to the Buccaneers.
Vincent Lee finished with nine assists, passing it to Darian Devereaux, who had five kills, and John Coggiola, who got three kills. Eric Baker had three digs and two aces. Mike Douglas (13 kills), Riley Mahoney (eight kills) and Nate Devinny (30 assists) led Oswego.
In Thursday’s match with Jamesville-DeWitt, Liverpool lost 25-18, 25-21, 25-14, to the Red Rams.
Lee (seven assists) was helped on the front line by Hunter Vang (five assists) as Devereaux and Aiden Shoemaker earned four kills apiece. Devereaux also had three aces, with two aces apiece from Vang, Eric Baker and Robert Senei.
