A busy, crowded regular season is over the area’s high school girls tennis teams, with Section III team tournaments getting underway.
West Genesee is the no. 2 seed in Class A behind Fayetteville-Manlius. Before this, the Wildcats locked up second place in the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division.
WG’s shutout of Syracuse East saw some different players in singles, including Mi Tran, who beat Yessica Chinea 6-0, 6-1, and Elisha Strachan, who routed Lori Tran 6-1, 6-2 as Emma Pinker handled Kabita Nepal 6-0, 6-2.
From their anchor position in doubles, Mikayla Mannara and Katie Viau blanked Asmita Bhattarai and Marian Del Valle 6-0, 6-0, with the teams of Annabelle Levy-Nicole Tessier and Angelina Llanos-Anastasia Mello getting shutouts, too. The duos of Natalie Thurston-Emma Yeager and Greta Hahn-Chloe Soltys also had two-set wins.
Marcellus, given the no. 10 seed in Class C, traveled to no. 7 seed Holland Patent in last Friday’s opening round and beat the Golden Knights 4-1 to earn a quarterfinal against no. 2 seed Canastota.
In singles, the Mustangs’ Kathleen DeMarie won, 6-3, 6-4, over HP’s Emma Shoemaker, with Danielle Copp beating Emily DePasquale 6-4, 6-4. Colleen Marsh took a 6-2, 7-5 defeat to Sara Mierek.
But Marcellus swept both doubles matches from the Golden Knights as Elaina Mahoney and Megan Mitchell handled Ashley Olney and Madison Parks 6-1, 6-0, with Kaitlyn Kemp and Morgan Walsh routing Bella Adamo and Jackie Mann 6-0, 6-1.
Westhill did not last beyond the opening round in the Class B sectional tournament, the no. 10 seed falling 7-0 to no. 7 seed Whitesboro.
Kaley Richmond, Cami Cortez and Grace Lesselroth each lost in singles in straight sets. Only one of the doubles matches went to three sets as Camille Argentieri and Zoe Hynes lost to Kylie Cleary and Karlie Cubino 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
In league action earlier in the week, Marcellus got close against Cazenovia last Monday, yet took a 4-3 defeat to the Lakers, who won all the points in singles.
Kemp and Walsh won 6-3, 6-2, over Kaitlyn Puffer and Nina Royer, with Marsh and Maddie Vetsch topping Nova Berger and Ella Koch 6-3, 7-5. Casey Conklin and Isabella Demeis won, 6-1, 6-0, over Clare Douglas and Baylee Pierce, but Mahoney and Mitchell lost to Abby Burrell and Charley Harris 6-1, 7-5.
Westhill and Jordan-Elbridge squared off last Tuesday, with the Eagles quite good in doubles, but unable to earn any points in singles and that proving costly as the Warriors prevailed 4-3.
Sophia Frost started that singles sweep, beating Maddie Green 6-2, 6-1. Cortez won 6-3, 6-0 over Wendy Carter, with Lesselroth getting a 6-2, 6-3 win over Meghan Whalen.
The Eagles countered with Delaney Dunham and Meghan Hatt winning 6-4, 6-2 over Mikayla Caroll and Kaley Richmond, with Skylar Crysler and Katelyn Precourt getting past Jillian Eckert and Hannah Johnston 6-1, 6-4.
In a third-set tie-breaker, Bella DeCola and Gabrielle Skotinski edged past Sophie Langdon and Madison Thomas 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, but Argentieri and Hynes earned Westhill’s clinching point, handling Anisa Bort and Maria LaFleur 6-2, 6-2.
A day later, J-E lost a 6-1 decision to Manlius-Pebble Hill, the only point earned in doubles by the Eagles as Crysler and Skotinski pairing up to top Ileana Anghel and Zhijie Han 6-2, 6-0.
Five of the six points MPH earned came with straight-set wins, J-E only extending the Trojans once as Dunham and Hatt started strong, but could not sustain it in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 defeat to Emma Gross and Grace Zhang.
Meanwhile, Westhill defeated Pulaski 5-0, with straight-set singles wins by Lesselroth and Cortez, plus a doubles battle where Paige Agostini and Bridget Thornton won, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, over Olivia Taylor and Jessica Yesensky.
When facing Skaneateles on Thursday afternoon, J-E dropped a 6-1 decision to that other group of Lakers as its regular season ended.
