From a scoring standpoint, the Baldwinsville girls swim team will always face its share of struggles due to its small roster, but individuals can still make an impact.
Kali Sacco, for example, gave the Bees a race victory in the 100-yard freestyle during last Wednesday’s meet at Auburn, though the Maroons still prevailed 88-74.
Battling with Auburn’s Makeena Wilson (who had already won the 50 freestyle), Sacco finished in 59.02 seconds, beating out Wilson’s runner-up time of 59.31 seconds.
Prior to that, B’ville had recorded a string of second-place finishes, including Ashley Konz going 27.37 seconds in the 50 freestyle behind Wilson, who won in 26.74 seconds.
A closely-fought 200 individual medley involved Sacco nearly catching the Maroons’ Claire Alexander, posting 2:24.62, just behind the 2:24.48 Alexander put up.
Clare Burke went 2:12.40 in the 200 freestyle, trailing Auburn’s Maura Moochler (2:07.26) as Burke also was second in the 500 freestyle in 5:43.62. Grace Skapura, in 1:10.99, trailed the Maroons’ Sydney Murinka (1:09.02) in the 100 butterfly.
Ashley Konz went 1:09.16 to finish second in the 100 backstroke, also pairing with Sacco, Skapura and Emily Spaulding to go 2:09.89 in the 200 medley relay. Sacco, Burke, Skapura and Konz went 1:50.87 in the 200 freestyle relay, less than a second behind Auburn (1:49.98).
Back home Friday to face Christian Brothers Academy, the Bees took a 53-40 defeat, again having Sacco earn its lone individual victory when she swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.86.
In the 100 freestyle, Sacco was second in 59.07 seconds to CBA’s Kaitlyn Bushnell (58.51), with Konz second in the 50 freestyle (26.91 seconds) and 500 freestyle.
Burke was second in the 200 freestyle (2:11.40) and 100 butterfly (1:09.56) as Spaulding went 1:16.42 in the 100 breaststroke for another runner-up finish. Spaulding, Burke, Sacco and Nora Wilson got second place in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:55.10.
