When the Baldwinsville boys tennis team met Fayetteville-Manlius on April 27, the fact that it clipped a couple of points from the Hornets was a sign that, perhaps, it was getting closer to the perennial champions.
However, the rematch last Tuesday was a bit more lopsided as the Bees lost, 6-1, only getting a point in first singles when Antonio Marsallo won a 6-4, 6-4 battle with the Hornets’ Rohan Dhawan.
It was Michael Miller earning a big point for F-M in singles when he outlasted Eric Smith 4-6, 7-5, 10-6, while in third singles Hunter Dukat ran into Dilan and lost, 6-0, 6-0.
F-M swept all four doubles matches, starting with Riley Ma and Taran Judge blanking Dukat and Sam Damato 6-0, 6-0. Joel Farella and Jeremy Zhang beat Alex Taylor and Anthony Pompo by those same scores.
David Fernando and Max Farber-McEntee won 6-2, 6-4 over Nick Licciardello and Max Funicello. Andy Sun and Ben Farber-McEntee beat Jonathan Oad and Beckett Plumley 6-4, 6-2.
The mad rush to finish all of its regular-season matches meant B’ville would need to play multiple matches on the same day.
For example, the Bees had two matches back-to-back against Syracuse East last Monday afternoon, winning both of them as it prevailed 6-1 in one match, 6-0 in the other.
All of the matches were single sets to eight games. Marsallo beat Tang Moan Lian 8-1, with Smith topping Hanh Duong 8-3 and Licciardello handling Matt Houck 8-2.
Damato and Alex Shaban got B’ville going in doubles, topping Be Aung and Samir Subba 8-3. Eric Delmonico and Jamus Socker lost, 8-4, to Chris Edmunds and Kyle Giardine, but Pompo and Taylor handled Tom Moore and Curran Shannon 8-0.
The second match, a shutout by B’ville of Syracuse East, saw Marsallo, Smith and Licciardello drop just three games in their three singles matches. Damato and Shaban blanked Aung and Lian 8-0, with Pompo and Taylor shutting out Giardine and Moore 8-0 as Latrell Budosh and Jeremy Rappard got past Edmunds and Shannon 8-2.
It proved closer for B’ville in Thursday’s match against Cicero-North Syracuse, where it gave up a couple of points, but still got past the Northstars 5-2.
Marsallo blanked Edwin Hirsh 6-0, 6-0, with Smith handling Ryan Hill by those scores. That made up for Rappard taking a 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 defeat to C-NS’s Ryan Gallagher as Funicello and Licciardello moved to doubles, handling Cody Barth and Kyle Bulko 6-3, 6-2.
Pompo and Taylor could not hold on in a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 loss to Jon Corl and Brandon Millias. However, Damato and Shaban dominated James Corl and Wyatt Dupell 6-1, 6-0, while Christian Treichler and Adam Van Apledoorn handled Jack Doren and Chris Perrotta 6-0, 6-1.
