Already off to a terrific start, the Marcellus softball hit another gear last week, highlighted by a five-inning no-hitter from pitcher Aubrey Fraher, the first of her varsity career.
Fraher achieved this in last Wednesday’s 23-0 victory over Hannibal, where she recorded 11 strikeouts and got lots of help from an offense that batted around twice in the first inning and amassed 15 runs.
Hannah Durand went three-for-four with a single, double, triple, four runs scored and four RBIs. Fraher contributed three RBIs as Emily Durand, Emily Weeks and Alyssa Cook scored three runs apiece. Hannibal helped out by committing 11 errors.
Marcellus had previously put its offense was on display in its15-2 win over Fulton on April 27, with the Mustangs scoring in every inning, capped by an eight-run outburst in the top of the fourth.
Ellie Mahoney singled, doubled, tripled and drove in four runs. Cook also had three hits as she and Emma MacLachlan each got two RBIs. Emily Durand scored three runs as she and Jessie Majo drove in one run apiece.
Solvay recovered well from its April 17 defeat to West Genesee, staying unbeaten in the OHSL Liberty division as it hosted Skaneateles last Monday and held off the Lakers 6-4.
All of the Bearcats’ runs came in the second and third innings. Delana Thomas earned a pair of RBIs, with Aleah Yaizzo, Maya Martineau, Hannah Martineau and Izzy Lambert driving in one run apiece.
Staked to that early 6-1 lead, Lambert pitched and watched Skaneateles use a pair of sixth-inning runs and a run in the seventh to make things close, but still got a complete game, earning 12 strikeouts to overcome five hits and five walks.
When Marcellus took its turn against Skaneateles on Thursday, it unleashed more offense in a 20-2 victory, amassing 23 hits as it scored in every inning except the fourth.
Hannah Durand went four-for-five, including three doubles, and drove in three runs. Webster’s pair of doubles led to four RBIs as Mahoney tripled and got three RBIs. MacLachlan and Isabella Rodalico had two RBIs apiece, with Frayer, Cook, Weeks, Shannon Kellar and Caroline Trytek each getting one RBI.
Solvay won again Friday, a rain-shortened 3-0 decision over Cazenovia where all of the Bearcats’ runs were scored in the fourth inning, the key blow Hannah Martineau’s two-run double. Thomas pitched and held the Lakers to three hits to earn the shutout.
Then, in a Saturday doubleheader, Solvay swept both games, beating West Seneca East 8-6 and pulling away from Goshen to prevail 10-3.
Against West Seneca East, a seven-run Bearcats outburst in the third inning quickly erased a 3-0 deficit, and it got a run in the bottom of the fifth after the Trojans closed the gap to 7-6.
Hope Rivera broke out with a single, double and three RBIs, with Aleah Yaizzo getting two hits as she drove in a pair of runs. Thomas and Caitlin McCann had one RBI apiece.
Goshen was next, and again Solvay trailed before it struck for four runs in the bottom of the third, adding to that total in the late stages as it gashed the Gladiators for 17 hits.
Yaizzo and Maya Martineau both went four-for-five and scored seven runs between them, Yaizzo getting three RBIs as Nadea Davis doubled, tripled and drove in three runs. Hannah Martineau added a pair of RBIs. Izzy Lambert pitched the second game after Thomas won the first, holding Goshen to seven hits.
Westhill had shown, in its limited action this season, that it had plenty of firepower at the plate, and showed that off again in last Tuesday’s 15-3 romp over Cazenovia.
With 11 total runs in the third and fourth innings, the Warriors broke it open, Ariel Cassidy, who pitched a complete game, had two hits, as did Bella Lavigne, Janae Ricks and Rae Daniul. Leah Diefendorf got two hits and scored three runs as Gabby Wicker contributed a double
As a follow-up, Westhill faced Homer Thursday and prevailed again, by a more modest 7-3 margin, taking charge with a three-run first inning and then getting four runs in the bottom of the fourth that proved decisive.
Cassidy struck out six and limited the Trojans to five hits. Daniul and Tess Hogan both finished with a pair of RBIs, with Ricks adding two hits and an RBI. Lavigne also drove in a run as Diefendorf and Wicker both scored twice.
