Entering the decisive month of May, the Skaneateles boys team sported a 3-3 record, sitting in second place in the Onondaga High School League Liberty National division standings behind Manlius-Pebble Hill.
To get above .500, the Lakers would need to beat Chittenango last Tuesday afternoon – and did so, claiming every set in singles on the way to a 4-1 victory over the Bears.
Dan Judge handled his first singles match with Sean Austin, winning 6-2, 6-1, with Nate Fouts just as dominant in taking out Evan Edwards 6-0, 6-3. Though the first set was close, Jack Belinski still beat Ben Cyr 7-5, 6-1.
Moving to doubles, the Lakers saw Andrew Neumann and Jake Panasci fall to Zach Falkenburg and Matt Lanphear 6-4, 6-2, but in a close battle Max Hall and Duncan Raddant held off Griffen and Nate Smith 7-5, 7-5.
Concluding April, the Lakers had shut out Onondaga 5-0. In single-set matches to 10 games, Judge, Raddant and Justin McClanahan all prevailed in singles, with doubles points going to the teams of Neumann- Panasci and Chris Burgher-Trevor Knupp.
For nearly two months, members of the Skaneateles girls golf team had to wait out weather that curtailed the practice schedule and then postponed four matches against Bishop Grimes, Cazenovia, Chittenango and CBA.
Finally, it cleared up for the Lakers to open last Monday in a three-team match against Marcellus, where it shot 227 to finish just behind the Warriors’ total of 221 as the Mustangs beat both of them with 198.
Julia Cirincone shot a 57 for nine holes to lead Skaneateles. The top individual round went to Marcellus’ Mary Colella, who had a 46, five shots ahead of Westhill’s Angela Vigliotti..
Back at Skaneateles Country Club on Friday, it was time for a Laker match, and Skaneateles got the best of it, posting the four best individual scores in a 196-229 victory over Cazenovia.
Karah Blair and Jenna Fields both shot rounds of 48, with Jillian Barker getting a 50 and Addison Gremli contributing a 52. All were ahead of the 56 by Cazenovia’s top individual, Sophie Clancy.
