Both the Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse Minoa boys track and field teams continue to set the pace in the Salt City Athletic Conference Empire division.
Each of these sides won three-sided league meets last Wednesday, with the Red Rams putting away Auburn 74-17 and PSLA-Fowler 70-21 as the Spartans did the same, topping Fulton 76-60 and Cortland 100-35.
J-D featured David Fikhman again as he tore to an 11-second time in the 100-meter dash and went exactly 50 seconds in the 400-meter dash.
Joey Armenta won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:02.1 and teamed with Donavon Coughlin, Haberle Conlon and Jarrell Harrison to take the 4×100 relay in 45.5 seconds. James Richer threw the discus 112 feet 10 inches, while Marcus Johnson had a winning triple jump of 40’5 ½”.
Alex Carbacio ran the 110 hurdles in 16 seconds flat as Nick Mannion won the mile in 4:58.83 after helping Kaleel Boykins, Fidel Martinez and Josh Hilliers win the 4×800 relay in 8:49.7.
ESM did most of its damage against Fulton and Cortland in field events. Spencer Caramanna went 19’5” in the long jump, while Re Khem El had a top triple jump of 38’10”, with Ermin Alemic second in both events.
Bennett Ferrari tied Fulton’s Collin Fyffe in the pole vault, each clearing 9 feet, while Gabe Holloman won the shot put with (44’ ¾”) and Gavin Stevens heaved the discus 131’5 ½” to top Emir Karic’s throw of 101’6”.
Success on the track was more limited for the Spartans, but Nick Berg still finished first in the mile in 4:52.9 and was second in the 3,200-meter run as Conner Hillman won the 400 hurdles in 1:04.8. Myles Riggins was second in the 110 hurdles.
Meanwhile, Fayetteville-Manlius had to visit Baldwinsville last Wednesday night, and only claimed a handful of events, most of them distance races, during a 102-39 defeat to the Bees.
Garrett Brennan won twice for the Hornets, running the mile in 4:30.25 and taking the 800 in 2:04.16. Geoff Howles was victorious in the 3,200 in 10:03.52.
Ryan Serp won the only other event for F-M, going 16.69 seconds in the 110 high hurdles. B’ville swept the relays and all field events, getting two victories apiece from Nate Jaquint (long jump, high jump), Cameron Majchrzak (shot put, discus) and Nick Kruger (400 hurdles, triple jump).
Going head-to-head last Tuesday afternoon, Bishop Grimes got the best of Manlius-Pebble Hill, with the Cobras defeating the Trojans 76-19 in a meet that also included Pulaski and Living Word Academy.
The girls meet between these same teams included a victory for Grimes’ Abby Wilkinson as, in the 800-meter run, Wilkinson posted a top time of 2:46.9.
J-D’s boys team ventured on Friday to the New Hartford Invitational, where it finished third with 35 points behind the host Spartans and Cicero-North Syracuse.
Fikhman again ruled in the 400 sprint, needing 50.22 seconds to get away from New Hartford’s Jeremiah Murray (53.14). He also helped Armenta, Conlon and Markos Petkopoulos roar to a season-best time of 3:30.77 to win the 4×400 by more than two seconds over New Hartford (3:32.90).
In the 4×100, Armenta, Conlon, Johnson and Harrison were third in 44.93 seconds, not far from the winning 44.83 posted by Carthage. Boykins, Mannion, Hillers and Josh Sweeney were third in the 4×800 in 8:55 flat. Johnson got to fifth place in the long jump, going 20’1¼”. Carbacio was fifth and Petkopoulos eighth in the 110 hurdles. Armenta was seventh in the 100 sprint.
