Not until it traveled to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at the outset of the school break did the Cazenovia baseball team get on the field for a full week of game action.
And it took until last Wednesday afternoon for the Lakers to make it to the win column, against Altmar-Parish-Williamstown, as it worked its way to a 7-4 victory over the Rebels.
Other OHSL Liberty divisions went with the Lakers, too, including Westhill, who met the Lakers at the start of the trip on April 22 and prevailed by a 7-1 margin.
Cazenovia actually struck first, Tripp Clarke scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Pitcher Dan Hammond maintained that 1-0 lead until the fourth, when Westhill tied it and then followed it up with three runs in the fifth to go in front for good.
All that the Lakers could manage against Warriors pitcher John Geer was two hits, one each by Dylan McCrink and Joe McLaughlin. Andrew O’Connor led the Warriors at the plate with three hits and two RBIs.
Yet another league game, against Bishop Grimes on Thursday, went 17-0 in the Cobras’ favor, so the Lakers would need to improve when it returned to Central New York for games this week against Chittenango, Homer and Solvay.
Meanwhile, in softball action, Cazenovia resumed on Thursday and lost, 14-3, to Holland Patent, scoring all of its runs in the third inning, but only after the Golden Knights got eight runs in the bottom of the first to seize control.
Following a Saturday game against Utica Proctor, the Lakers would meet Chittenango, Westhill, Bishop Grimes, Homer and Solvay this week, if the weather held up.
Chittenango returned to action last Friday and dropped a 10-0 decision to Homer, only managing a pair of hits against Trojans pitcher Bryant Quinlan. The Bears face Hannibal and Mexico this week.
