The lingering bad weather in April forced the Cazenovia boys lacrosse team to move more home games – some to Christakos Field at Cazenovia College, others to Morrisville State College.
For example, the Lakers’ game against Chenango Valley on Thursday went to Morrisville State, this after a trip to Carthage last Monday got postponed by still more rain and snow. It would get made up Monday at the outset of the school break.
Yet it still snowed at Morrisville State on Thursday, covering the turf, with officials having to clear the end lines, sidelines and center line to keep things going.
Fortunately for Cazenovia, the game was settled by halftime, the Lakers bolting out to a 13-0 lead by halftime and then easing up in the second half on the way to a 14-1 win.
Alex Nowak and Cole Basic both notched three-goal hat tricks, with Brian Pezzi notching three assists as he and Steve Lafever both scored twice.
Thomas Bragg contributed a goal and two assists, with Ryan Romagnoli, Trey Schug and Matt McLaughlin earning one goal apiece. Zach Wendel had the other goal.
Then, on Saturday, it was back to Cazenovia College for the Lakers as it hosted Tully, and again the Lakers controlled matters on both ends, pulling away to beat the Black Knights 10-2.
Led by the likes of Schug and Jon Maracek, Cazenovia’s defense shut out Tully in the first half. R.J. Smith finished with six saves as the Lakers only surrendered single goals in the third and fourth quarters.
Meanwhile, Nowak and Bragg did most of the serious work on the other end. Nowak scored five times, adding two assists as Bragg earned four goals. Romagnoli gained one goal and one assist.
Chittenango had its own postponement last Monday of a game against LaFayette before it resumed action on Tuesday, against Manlius-Pebble Hill in snowy conditions.
The Bears had little trouble with the Trojans, prevailing 17-3 as it kept MPH off the board during the first half and steadily built a 9-0 advantage.
Shane Kolb and Caleb Barnard each got four goals and two assists, with Zeph Scott also scoring four times. Seth Spurgeon earned two goals and one assist as single goals went to Hunter Penoyer, Billy Demand and Francis Cerio.
Favored again in Saturday’s game against Utica Proctor, the Bears pummeled the Raiders 18-1, with Scott getting five goals and one assist and Barnard earning four assists to go with a three-goal hat trick, and Kolb piling up six assists.
Spurgeon got three goals and two assists, with Demand getting two goals and three assists. Cerio also picked up two goals as Jackson Lawrence contributed an assist.
The Carthage game is the first of three in four days for Cazenovia, who would turn around Tuesday and face Bishop Ludden/Onondaga Tuesday and LaFayette on Thursday, both of those games at Christakos Field starting at noon.
At 3-2 following the easy wins over MPH and Proctor, Chittenango would take on Tully before hosting Skaneateles on Thursday and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill on Saturday.
