Though many Central New York high school baseball teams were able to start their seasons last week in between the raindrops, Cazenovia had to wait a bit longer.
All of the Lakers’ games were postponed last week, and it hoped to get going this week against Madison and Marcellus before heading to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina during the April school break.
When Chittenango opened its baseball season at Westhill last Tuesday afternoon, it only allowed four hits, yet still took a 7-1 defeat to the Warriors.
Noah Schnauffer walked and scored in the top of the first inning, putting the Bears in front 1-0. But it got nothing more against pitchers Ben Coates and Nate King, who combined to strike out 10, overcoming nine walks, two each to Schnauffer, Ronnie Ince and Nick Callahan.
Meanwhile, Devon Spaulding took the loss, pitching three innings and striking out five, but exiting amid a four-run fourth inning that allowed Westhill to break a 1-1 tie. Adam Herne led the Warriors with a pair of RBIs.
Chittenango got back on the diamond again Saturday to take on its Route 5 neighbors from Canastota, and while its production improved, it still lost to the Raiders 8-6.
The Bears notched runs in each of the first five innings, yet still saw a 4-1 lead disappear when Canastota scored twice in the third inning and broke out for five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Spaulding, Schnauffer and Joe Mosack each got credit for driving in a run. Ian Torkelson led the Raiders with three hits and got the save in relief of Jacob Malbouf and Ken Coe as Matt DiGeorge and Sam DiGeorge each drove in two runs.
If the weather cleared up, the Bears would have consecutive games this week at Solvay, Oneida and Jordan-Elbridge
