Whether it was success in distance races or a clean sweep of field events, the Cazenovia boys track and field team found plenty of places to pile up points in last Wednesday’s season opener against Christian Brothers Academy at Buckley-Volo Field.
The foundation of the Lakers’ 105-36 victory over the Brothers was laid by the likes of James McPherson, who claimed the mile in exactly four minutes, 59 seconds and then pulled away to take the 3,200-meter run in 11:15.8, with Noah DeRochie second in 11:41.1.
Justin Gagnon won the 110 high hurdles in 16.9 seconds ahead of Jacob Olkowski (19.1 seconds), while Olkowski rebounded to win the 400-meter hurdles in 1:46.5 over McPherson (1:46.9).
Olkowski also helped Cormac Race, James Pavelchak and Nick Barna claim the 4×400 relay in a time of 3:55.3. Gagnon, Pavelchak, Sam DeLeon and Jack McNerney were victorious in the 4×100 relay in 46.6 seconds.
Cazenovia was even more dominant in field events, sweeping all the titles as Ray Satchwell went 19 feet 11 inches in the long jump and won the triple jump with 39’ ¼” ahead of DeLeon’s 38’3 ¾”.
But DeLeon sparkled in the pole vault, clearing 12’6” to establish himself as a championship contender in that event. Satchwell, Dalton Sevier and Austin Sanders each cleared 5’6” in the high jump, with Christian Winkler throwing the discus 128’4” and Chad Carges tossing the shot put 36’3” to beat Josh Maxwell’s 33’5 ½”.
Chittenango was to open against Mexico on Thursday, but weather forced a postponement. Instead, the boys Bears opened at Saturday’s Cicero-North Syracuse Relays at the same Bragman Stadium complex that will host the state championships June 8-9.
Picking up 15 points to take ninth place in a 15-team field, Chittenango saw Devin Myers and Jeremy Warters pick up eight of those points by finishing second in the 110 hurdles, their times of 34.80 seconds topped only by host C-NS’s 32.23-second effort.
Waters and Lucas Spirilidozzi got fourth place in the 400 hurdles with total times of 2:10.43. Myers returned in the long jump as he and Jacobi Dwyer were fourth, with leaps adding up to 36’2 ½”.
Dylan Price, Matt Morak, Jake Boyer and Parker Tedford were sixth in the sprint medley relay in 4:04.06 as the Bears were also seventh in the 4×400 in 3:56.86 and 11th in the 4×800.
