A season full of winning efforts for West Genesee boys indoor track and field sprinter Esisas Brumfield continued when he claimed victory in the 55-meter dash during Thursday’s Section III Class AA championships at SRC Arena.
Having claimed the 55 sprint during the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division meet one week earlier, Brumfield needed 6.77 seconds to prevail here, just ahead of Nottingham’s Nasir Jones, who was second with 6.79 seconds.
Brumfield also claimed fourth place in the 300-meter dash in 37.61 seconds and, paired with Griffin Dombroske, Jacob Petrocci and Brian Mirabito, made it to third place in the 4×200 relay in 1:36.83, not far from the winning 1:36.34 posted by Liverpool.
WG picked up 45 points overall to finish fifth in the nine-team Class AA sectional field. Baldwinsville, earning 158 points, won the sectional title.
Dombroske flew 20 feet 8 ¾ inches in the long jump for third place, also taking seventh in the triple jump. Paul Stananrd got to third place in the 600-meter run in 1:27.56 before joining with Nathan Couse, Ryan Allen and Sean Byrnes to get fifth place in the 4×800 relay in 8:44.50.
Matt Bartolotta earned fourth place in the 3,200-meter run in 10:09.80, with Byrnes sixth in 10:12.67. Bartolotta also got sixth place in the mile in 4:50.36.
Couse, Allen, Luke Mullane and Robert Ciarla were fourth in the 4×400 relay in 3:46.48. Cole Nowark threw the shot put 39’9” for sixth place as Dan Gill took eighth place in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.91 seconds.
The West Genesee girls team was sixth in its sectional Class AA meet with 18 points as Fayetteville-Manlius won with 141 points.
Nearly half the Wildcats’ points came from the 4×400, where Catilin Mills, Megan Delia, Kelsey Fox and Abby Kuppinger finished in 4:12.30, trailing only F-M’s winning time of 4:09.64.
Fox, on her own, cleared 7 feet for fourth place in the pole vault, while Elizabeth Baker matched that fourth-place effort in the high jump, clearing 5 feet.
Carly Benson made it to fifth place in the 1,000-meter run in 3:09.76, adding a ninth-place finish in the 600 as she helped Natalie Buckhout, Sandy Giardino and Olivia Lockwood finish seventh in the 4×800 in 10:52.65.
Kuppinger, Delia, Baker and Amina Mambambu were seventh (1:53.82) in the 4×200, with Delia getting to seventh place in the triple jump with a best attempt of 34’3”.
A night earlier, the sectional Class B and C meets were snowed out, so Westhill, Marcellus, Jordan-Elbridge and Solvay will make that up at SRC Arena next Wednesday prior to the rescheduled state qualifier on Feb. 18.
