The Skaneateles girls ice hockey team spent more than two weeks resting and working in practice on the issues brought up when Ithaca put an end to the Lakers’ 28-game win streak on Dec. 19.
When things finally resumed last Wednesday night, Skaneateles traveled to Crisafuli Rink, better known as “The Fort”, to face Oswego, and nearly got beat again before a late surge produced a 4-3 victory over the Buccaneers.
These same teams had met Dec. 5 in Skaneateles, and the Lakers handled that one, prevailing 5-1. But the rematch proved far closer.
Also coming off its own 15-day break, the Bucs roared to a 2-0 first-period lead. Skaneateles tightened its defense, though, and caught up, 2-2, by the time they reached the final period.
Oswego got another goal in that third period, but the Lakers converted twice and went out in front, seeing Megan Teachout finish the night with two goals as Sophia Burns got one goal and one assist.
Campbell Torrey earned the other goals, with assists credited to Ionna Christou and Anne Rubel. Stephanie Kubis, Cammi Ahern and Hannah Koster each had one goal for the Bucs as goalie Ashley Finch made 29 saves.
After last Saturday’s game with Potsdam was postponed, the Lakers would get a chance on Tuesday for payback against Ithaca on home ice before a Friday-night trip to Clinton.
