Now it’s four wins in a row to open the season for the Skaneateles girls basketball team, with a chance to build up even more confidence before the calendar turns to 2018.
When the Lakers traveled to Cortland last Friday night, it had not played in nine days, but thanks to another big effort from Olivia Dobrovosky, Skaneateles cleared that obstacle and crushed the Purple Tigers 51-36.
To this point, Skaneateles, in wins over Tully, Marcellus and Jordan-Elbridge, had shown that it could win any style of game, and with Cortland it was defense that mattered most, especially in the early going.
The Lakers held the Purple Tigers to just three points in the first quarter. Gradually, the margin kept growing, and Skaneateles was up 20-13 by the end of the second quarter, taking it further even when Cortland started producing baskets on a regular basis.
Dobrovosky, between six field goals (two of them 3-pointers) and nine free throws, amassed 23 points, but had ample support from Hannah Atkinson, who had 11 points, and Chloe Metz, who got 10 points.
By contrast, no Purple Tigers player hit double figures, though Tsai Lewis did get 11 rebounds to go with her eight points as Alaina Rabusin had seven points and Ashley Shortsleeve had six points.
The Lakers’ four-game win streak would be on the line Monday night, at Phoenix, before Skaneateles gets back home Thursday for a Laker duel with Cazenovia.
