A mere six days after captaining the Skaneateles football team to a state Class C championship, T.J. Greenfield was back on the wrestling mat.
Grenfield was part of a Lakers wrestling team that began its 2017-18 season last Saturday with a 2-3 record at the Rebel Duals, hosted by the combined APW/Pulaski program.
One of the two Skaneateles victories was a narrow 40-39 win over Moravia, where Greenfield’s 34-second pin of Jake Langrty clinched the team win and Christian Daley (138 pounds) beat Casey Smith 11-1.
Joey Brillo (145 pounds) pinned Josiah Letts near the end of the first period, with James Leubner (160 pounds) taking just 53 seconds to pin Garrett Kuhn. Mason Michel (99 pounds), Boaz Arold (113 pounds) and Dylan O’Hara (285 pounds) claimed forfeits.
Skaneateles also topped Oswego 48-36, with pins from Greenfield, Daley, Brillo and Preston Blake (120 pounds), who finished off Trey Seguin in the waning seconds of their bout.
Forfeits went to Joey Winkler (132 pounds), along with Michel and Arold, while Yorvin Solis, at 160 pounds, pinned the Buccaneers’ Cody Vincent with 26 seconds left in their bout.
Elsewhere, Skaneateles lost, 48-39, to Jordan-Elbridge, with Greenfield, Arold, Leubner and Daley picking up pins and Brillo beating Marion Quigley 8-1.
Also, the Lakers fell 46-33 to host APW/Pulaski, though Daley edged Kyle Dimon 3-1 after pins by Brillo and Joey Winkler (132 pounds), who beat David Koloziejczyk in 31 seconds. Greenfield, moved up to 285 pounds, pinned Tyler Crandall in 91 seconds following a win by O’Hara at 220 over Damian West 8-2. Arold claimed a 12-10 classic over Alex Currie.
A 60-30 defeat to Canton started with Arold’s 52-second pin over Brock Francis. Greenfield claimed a forfeit, with Winkler, Brillo and Daley also earning pins, but Canton winning every bout from 152 to 195 pounds.
As all five matches showed, Skaneateles was breaking in plenty of new faces to its lineup, having seen seven seniors graduate from the 2016-17 squad, five of whom were All-League selections. But Arold proved the best of those newcomers, going 5-0 on Saturday to earn his team’s Most Outstanding Wrestler honors as Greenfield and Brillo also went 5-0 and Winkler was 4-1.
Skaneateles has its first home meet of the season Wednesday night against Mexico before going to Saturday’s Portville Invitational.
