All through the last full week of October, the West Genesee girls swim team engaged in a series of meets that would complete the preparations for this weekend’s Section III championships.
It started with Skaneateles paying a visit last Monday night, with the Wildcats able to pile up points throughout the early events on the way to defeating the Lakers 95-86.
Continuing her fine season, Maddie Zapisek swam the 200-yard freestyle in a top time of two minutes, 5.07 seconds before getting first place in the 100 freestyle in 58.01 seconds.
In between those events, Allison Putnam won the 200 individual medley in 2:30.56, part of a 1-2 WG effort as Abrianna Gatschau was second in 2:34.41.
Hannah Jasinski had the quickest time in the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.52, edging Skaneateles’ Ava Prochna (1:18.01) as she paired with Anna Ivery, Miki Riley and Morgan Cappon to take the 200 medley relay in 2:05.07.
Later in the meet, Zapisek, Rachel Whiting, Hannah Murdoch and Shannon Norton won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:52.15 as Riley, Cappon, Julianna Lisi and Maggie Smith were second in 1:54.08.
The Wildcats next hosted Christian Brothers Academy on Wednesday night, honoring its seniors in their last home meet and then putting up a strong effort despite a 100-86 loss to the Brothers.
Putnam prevailed in the 200 freestyle in 2:12.83 as Gattschau (2:14.42) made it a 1-2 finish. Zapisek was first in the 100 freestyle in 58.10 seconds over CBA’s Kaitlyn Bushnell (58.85), but was second in the 200 IM in 2:28.06 to the Brothers’ Lauren Kelly (2:22.57).
Gattschau was second in the 500 freestyle in 5:46.94 as Ivery took second in the 50 freestyle in 27.69 seconds and also was runner-up in the 100 backstroke in 1:10.84. Haley Hagadorn gained second place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.41.
Claire Kitts, with 186.30 points, took second in the diving event behind CBA’s Sam Lanzafame (213.60 points). Zapisek, Gattschau, Jasinski and Murdoch went 4:00.80 in the 400 freestyle relay, three-hundredths of a second behind CBA’s 4:00.77, with Ivery joining Zapisek, Murdoch and Cappon to go 1:50.33 in the 200 freestyle relay.
