Now the Jamesville-DeWitt girls cross country team had inched into the state Class B top 10, which it celebrated last Tuesday with an easy 15-48 home victory over the Auburn Maroons.
The Red Rams swept the top six positions, Sophia Vinciguerra prevailing in 20:11 over Maddie Foss (20:18) as Ayla Erwin, Abigail Leavitt, Abby Palin and Amelia Gilbert all crossed the finish line in 22:37 ahead of Auburn’s Kate Izzo (22:54). Sam Aitkens (24:11) and Amanda Semmel (24:13) also had top-10 finishes on J-D’s side.
J-D’s boys team handled Auburn 17-42, with Kaleel Boykins at the forefront of a top-four Red Rams sweep as he won in 18:28. Ahviere Reese was second, in 18:32, just ahead of Nate Rindfuss (18:33) and Nick Mannion (18:35) as the Maroons took the next three spots, but Alan Gao was eighth in 18:48 ahead of Collin Revercomb (19:01) and Fidel Martinez (19:12).
From there, J-D went to Saturday’s Whitesboro Invitational, where the boys Red Rams finished third with 66 points behind New Hartford (52 points) and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill (57 points) in a close battle at the top.
Boykins finished sixth among individuals in a time of 17:45.1. Nate Rindfuss was 12th, in 18:20.6, while Reese got 14th place in 18:21.2. Mannion finished 16th in 18:36.2 as Martinez got 18th place (18:41.8) and Revercomb was 20th in 18:46.5.
J-D’s girls also finished third at Whitesboro, trailing South Lewis (37 points) and VVS (54 points), though Foss ran to second place in 19:45.2 and Vinciguerra got fourth place in 20:01.7. Leavitt managed 15th place in 22:26.5 as Gilbert was 21st in 22:54.7. Ayla Erwin nabbed 29th place (23:24.1) as Megan Brown (24:04.7) was five seconds ahead of Lanya Liebler-Bendix (24:29.70) in 36th place.
East Syracuse Minoa returned to Salt City Athletic Conference Empire division action last Tuesday and swept past Oswego, the boys prevailing 21-38 and the girls roaring past the Buccaneers 23-38.
Nick Berg, fresh off his strong finish at the Sept. 30 McQuaid Invitational in Rochester, led the boys Spartans, pulling away to win in 17:06, well clear of teammate David Rivers, who in 17:51 held off Oswego’s Harley Brinkman (17:54) for the runner-up spot.
Nolan Byrd finished fourth, in 18:23, but the real ESM getaway didn’t happen until Casey Engineri got to sixth place in 18:59 and Michael Sanders finished seventh in 19:08. Michael Nesci (19:38) beat out Marcus Evans (19:48) for ninth place.
Meanwhile, in the girls race, ESM’s Emma Biel finished second, in 22:41, well back of Oswego’s Miranda Gilbert (21:45) for individual honors, but leading a group of Spartans that occupied seven of the top nine positions.
Julia Schug finished third, in 23;18, with Mary Roach edging Jazmin Tyo for fifth place, though both finished in 23:41. Just behind them, Mary Neff got seventh place in 23:44 as Marina Lopez made it to eighth place in 24;10.
Bishop Grimes took boys defeats to Tully (15-49) and LaFayette (21-38) last Tuesday afternoon, as Robbie Finger earned the lone top-10 time for the Cobras, finishing in 21:45 as the Lancers’ James Baker won in 17:54.
Manlius-Pebble Hill beat Syracuse Academy of Science and Blessed Virgin Mary last Wednesday in a meet that included Weedsport, who topped the Trojans 16-45. Mathias Deldique led MPH, finishing fifth in the race in a time of 20:51 as Dan Braverman was eighth in 21:50.
