Yet another local girls volleyball rivalrly renewed itself last Tuesday night as Westhill visited Marcellus, with the Warriors getting the best of it in three sets, all of them by similar margins.
Westhill won the first and third sets 25-20, claming the second set 25-19 in between as Montanna Gedney earned 14 kills, nine assists and nine digs to lead the visitors, with Mackenzie Martin adding 23 assists, 11 digs, five kills and four aces.
Brigid Heinrich had eight kills, with Sara Galante contributing five kills and seven digs. Sophia Sgroi had four digs as, for Marcellus, Olivia Quick earned 14 assists, with Julia Piorkowski adding six kills and six digs. Sydney French had 10 digs and three blocks as she and Meghan O’Brien each got five kills. Michaela Godbold added nine digs.
Then both teams won on Wednesday, Westhill hosting Class A contender Jamesville-DeWitt and proving quite impressive in a 25-20, 25-14, 25-23 sweep of the Red Rams.
Martin burned J-D with 16 assists, 14 digs, seven kills and three digs, with Gedney adding eight kills, six assists and 10 digs. Galante mixed in seven kills and eight digs as Sgroi, with eight digs, and Leah Diefendorf, with seven digs, helped on the defensive side. Madeline Ferris (22 assists) and Alexandria Payne (14 kills, 11 digs) led the Rams.
Marcellus, meanwhile, swept Phoenix 25-9, 25-16, 25-15, with seven different players earning a combined 17 aces. Rachel Randall had five of those aces plus seven digs, with French adding four aces to go with five kills and eight digs. O’Brien led with 11 kills and Grace Hoey added five kills as Quick earned 21 assists, five digs and three kills.
In Thursday’s 25-17, 25-18, 26-24 sweep of Institute of Technology Central, Westhill saw its reserves see extensive action. Sarah Schwartz had nine assists and eight digs, with Isabella Radio-Rodriguez earning four aces and matching Galante’s total of five kills. Martin had seven assists and four aces as Emma Bryant earned four kills, with Emma Shampine and Aubrey Thompson each earning three kills.
Marcellus won Friday over Mexico in three sets, the 25-18, 25-9, 25-16 decision featuring French getting seven aces and seven kills as Piorkowski had six kills and O’Brien five kills. Quick got 11 assists and four kills, with Michaela Godbold earning six assists and five digs.
Solvay began its work last week with Monday’s three-set sweep of Jordan-Elbridge, but earned an even bigger win 24 hours later when it went to Skaneateles and knocked off the 8-1 Lakers in four sets.
Down 16-15 in the first set, the Bearcats won 10 of the last 11 points to claim that set 25-17. A back-and-forth second set went 26-24 in Solvay’s favor, and even though Skaneateles pulled out the third set 25-23, the Bearcats jumped out to a 19-9 lead in the fourth set and, by another 25-17 margin, won it.
As a follow-up, Solvay beat Living Word Academy, preserving the sweep by surviving a 33-31 third set in the wake of claiming the first two sets by 25-14 and 25-16 margins.
West Genesee paid a visit to undefeated Baldwinsville last Tuesday, three weeks after getting swept by the Bees in Camillus. Here, the result wasn’t much different as the Wildcats took a 25-14, 25-15, 25-15 defeat to the Bees.
Anna Snyder led WG with nine assists and nine digs. Carolyn King got five kills as Audrey Dennis earned seven digs, Brynn Zajac five digs and Sam Sprague and Madison Stanton four digs apiece. B’ville featured Maddie Stone (26 assists) and Summer McClintic (23 digs) on its back line as Katie Welcher got nine kills.
Then the Wildcats faced Fayetteville-Manlius on Friday, and it went just like their Sept. 14 meeting, with the Wildcats winning the first set 25-22, dropping the second and third sets 25-19 and 25-21, and rallying to take the fourth set 25-19 before the Hornets pulled it out, 25-22, in the final set.
Dennis had 21 digs and 12 kills, with King recording 21 kills. Sarah Rigge had seven kills and Sprague six kills as Snyder got 28 assists and nine digs, with Caroline Sgroi earning 12 digs. Arlea Vecchio and Greta Jasinski had seven digs apiece. F-M’s Arianna Madill amassed 58 assists as Paige Hulbert got 28 kills and 11 digs, with Saara Vahtola adding 22 kills and 14 digs.
As for Bishop Ludden, it hosted Hannibal last Monday night, with the Gaelic Knights winning the first set 25-21, but gradually seeing the Warriors take over as it got even, 25-22, in the second set and then won the next two sets by 25-16 and 25-17 margins.
Aurora Deshaies still had 19 kills and five blocks, while Maylasia Wright fed her with 18 assists, adding five digs. Sarah Smith added three kills as Meghan Wilkinson had 11 digs and Josie Towne got four digs. Hannibal featured 11 aces and 10 digs from Cassie Long as Katie Pitcher earned 11 kills and six blocks, with Abigail Kyle getting 13 assists.
Ludden then swept J-E 25-10, 25-17, 25-16 a night later. Madison Prowak, with seven aces, set the tone as Deshaies got five aces to go with six kills. Smith also had six kills as Wright earned four aces and Wilkinson got seven digs. Cassie Klock (four kills) and Emily Bard (nine digs) paced J-E’s efforts.
On Thursday night, the Gaelic Knights lost in three sets to LaFayette 25-11, 25-19, 25-18. Morrell still had five assists, with Deshaies and Mary Patrick each getting three kills as Wilkinson put up 15 digs. Bethany Miller led the Lancers with 18 assists.
J-E won Thursday over Hamilton in a three-set sweep where all of the sets ended with scores of 25-19. Molly Derby had six kills, with Emily Jennings getting seven assists and MacKenzie Kreisler getting five assists. Renee Eggleston had four aces and three kills as Evelyn Woodin had six aces and Cassie Schader three kills.
