Another busy and tough week for the area’s girls tennis team included West Genesee earning a series of victories against Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division opponents.
It started with the Wildcats defeating Liverpool 5-2 last Monday afternoon in Camillus. Mikayla Mannara won her singles match over Julie Schewe 6-1, 6-4 as Katie Viau beat Erin Chambrone 6-1, 7-5. Greta Hahn played third singles and lost, 6-2, 6-4, to Diana Kozenyatko.
Stopped in doubles when Mi Tran and Emma Yeager lost, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) to the Warriors’ Giana LaValle and Aryanna Davia, the Wildcats beat the Warriors in the other doubles showdowns.
Angelina Llanos and Nichole Thurston beat Meghan Blake and Valerie Morgans 6-3, 6-1, while Anastasia Mello and Phoebe Nelson got past Grace Underwood and Crystal Morgans 6-3, 6-2. Danielle Bertelli and Andrea Andreeva won, 6-2, 6-1, over Erica Gibbs and Natalie Kidd.
WG went from there to surviving a 4-3 battle with Central Square a day later, needing to make up for the Redhawks sweeping all three doubles matches, the closest of them Emma Pinker’s 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 defeat to Stephanie Kubis as Tran and Andreeva also lost singles matches.
Mannara and Viau shut out Victoria Tyrrell and Brittney Schill 6-0, 6-0, with Thurston and Llanos handling Maddie Haley and Madeline Turo 6-2, 6-1. Mello and Nelson claimed a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Nicole Connors and Maegan Dean as Bertelli and Yeager handled Haley Gugino and Alaina Godici 6-0, 6-1.
Playing for the third time in as many days on Wednesday, WG beat Cicero-North Syracuse 4-1, helped by Viau’s 6-4, 6-4 singles win over Ava Breitbeck as Mannara stopped Hanna Costello 6-0, 6-1. Among the doubles matches, Mello and Nelson topped Miranda Szwej and Anna Dwyer 6-1, 6-1.
Westhill had to work for every point to win Wednesday’s match with Phoenix, prevailing 4-3 with three of the four points coming in doubles, including a match where Grace and Katie Lesselroth beat Molly Thorn and Ashley Kenner-Carbonaro 6-0, 6-1.
Cami Cortez, paired with Zoe Hynes, handled Katelyn Carbonaro and Jordan Cole 6-0, 6-2. Freeman and Kaley Richmond lost in straight sets, but Sophia Frost and Paige Agostini gained a 6-3, 6-4 win over Courtney Worden and Mariana Barrington.
Up in singles play, Frost lost, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 to Lauren Schmidt, and Mikayla Carroll fell in straight sets, too, but Kaleigh Danaher secured the fourth point with her 6-2, 6-4 win over Gianna DeRoberts.
In Friday’s match against Mexico, the Warriors prevailed 5-2, starting with Danaher blanking Joline Hernandez 6-0, 6-0, with Frost dominating Juliana Smith by those same scores. Westhill also won three of four doubles matches as Cortez paired with Agostini to beat Trina Edwards and Emma Tater 6-2, 6-2, while the Lesselroth sisters got a 6-0, 6-1 win over Destiny Teach and Mia Morris.
Marcellus rolled past Pulaski 7-0 last Monday, with Courtney Otis and Madeline Mahoney each getting 6-0, 6-0 singles wins over, respectively, Chyanna LaCelle and Cassie McGregor. The Mustangs’ doubles teams of Mikayla Cusick-Kathleen DeMarie, Caroline Keegan-Marcy Gosson and Kim Myers-SydneySpanfeler dropped just two games in six combined sets against their Blue Devlis’ foes.
Jordan-Elbridge was unable to take a point from Skaneateles in last Monday’s 7-0 defeat. Bella DeCola and Abby Skotinski each lost 6-1, 6-0 singles matches to, respectively, Hope Allyn and Emma Miller, with Chelsea Curtis and Delaney Dunham falling to Caroline Hagen and Melissa Biver 6-0, 6-2. Megan Hatt and Abbey Karlik lost, 6-1, 6-1, to Lily Datz and Rachel Feeney.
Against Cazenovia on Friday, J-E could not get on the board in a 7-0 defeat, with none of the singles players – Skotinski, Wendy Carter and Sarah Williams – able to land games in their matches, while in doubles Bella DeCola and Maddie Green made some headway, but lost, 6-2, 6-2, to Annie Gale and Eva Salzman.
