Amid a busy slate of track and field meets last Wednesday, Westhill-Bishop Ludden would defeat Phoenix on both the boys and girls sides.
The boys Warriors beat the Firebirds 87-54 to improve to 4-0 on the season, led by the trio of Tom Howard, Jake Suddaby and Sean Corbett, each of whom would win two individual events.
Howard ran the 100-meter dash in 11.7 seconds and then took the 200-meter dash in 23 seconds flat. Howard also paired with Evan Watt, Connor Schwartz and Brad Zell as Westhill-Ludden took the 4×100 relay in 46.2 seconds.
Suddaby excelled in the day’s longest races, claiming the mile in four minutes, 53.7 seconds, and then adding a 3,200-meter title in 11:01.7. Watt claimed the Warriors’ other race title when he won the 400-meter hurdles in 59.5 seconds.
Corbett, again dominating the throwing contests, went 111 feet 4 inches in the discus and threw the shot put 44’9” to prevail there, too. Ben Eassa cleared 10’6” to win the pole vault, while Owen Hoyne topped 5’4” for first place in the high jump.
In the girls 101-40 victory, Westhill-Ludden featured Alyssa Holstein, who got first place in the 100 hurdles in 16.7 seconds and the 400 hurdles in 1:16 flat. Noelle Coolican was first in the 800 in 2:31.4 and the 1,500 in 5:31 flat, with Coolican also claring 9’6” in the pole vault.
Zoe Fortin took both the long jump (15’8 ½”) and the triple jump, where she went 30’8”. Alaina Kenny not only won the 3,000 in 11:50.1, she was part of the Warriors’ winning 4×800 relay side (11:38.4) as Coolican helped the 4×400 side finish in 4:38.2.
Jordan-Elbridge had its girls track team defeat Pulaski 93-51, and the boys won 100-40 over the Blue Devils, with Ethan Kinney at the forefront as he won the 100 (11.9 seconds) and 400 (56.8 seconds) and ran legs in all three winning relays – the 4×100 (49.9 seconds), 4×400 (3:54.4) and 4×800 (9:27.9).
Hugh Schader, who was in the 4×800, also claimed the mile in 5:16.5, while Logan Kinney took the 800 in 2:21.9. Marion Quigley won the 110 hurdles in 16.8 seconds as Ryan Chiaramonte went 1:11.1 in the 400 hurdles and Nate Jennings won the 200 in 26.8 seconds.
Getting three wins in field events, the Eagles featured Austin Cassick, who threw the discus 111’5”. Ethan Madden had a top triple jump of 34’9” as Nate Williams managed to clear 9’6” in the pole vault.
Solvay found itself swept last Wednesday by Cazenovia, both of whose teams stayed undefeated.
In the girls Bearcats’ 108.5-32.5 defeat to the Lakers, Alexa Bagozzi and Brielle Bagozzi tied Cazenovia’s Maddy Gavitt in the high jump, each of them clearing 4’6”. Katie Harrington won the 100 hurdles in 17.3 seconds and edged Payton Basic in the 400 sprint, though both finished in 1:08.3.
Zoe Francemone, Kailtyn Crosset, Serenity Thomas and Jordyn Willsey won the 4×400 in 4:39.7, this right after Thomas went 29.2 seconds in the 200, the same time as Cazenovia’s Chloe Smith.
The boys meet saw Solvay fall to Cazenovia 111-30, though Jordan Devereaux won the 200 in 23.8 seconds to atone for a close defeat in the 100, 11.7 seconds to Alec Boone’s 11.6. Ed Matysuk took the 400 hurdles in 1:06.2 as Lamar Flood cleared 5’8” in the high jump and Dylon Ewers was second in the long jump, going 19’7”.
