A big victory for the West Genesee boys track and field team took place last Wednesday at Fayetteville-Manlius, where the Wildcats fought through cold, windy conditions to beat the Hornets 87-54.
WG swept all of the sprints, starting in the 100-meter dash, where Andrew Berry prevailed in 11.4 seconds after Tim Huppman took the 110 high hurdles in 19.1 seconds. Esisas Brumfield won the 200-meter dash in 23.4 seconds as Griffin Dombroske claimed the 400-meter dash in 53.1 seconds.
David Leff, despite the tough conditions, broke two minutes in the 800-meter run to win in 1:59.2. Dombroske, Paul Stannard, Javier Monserrate and Cameron Mitchell won the 4×400 relay in 3:40.8 as Berry, Brumfield, Peter Bowman and Mark Kopp won the 4×100 in 44.6 seconds.
Dombroske tacked on a title in the triple jump, going 38’11” as Bowman cleared 10’6” in the pole vault. Evan Tuthill unleashed a discus throw of 138’2”, one of his best of the season, and also won the shot put with a toss of 41’10 ¾”.
It was different in the girls meet, where West Genesee lost, 90-51, to F-M. Megan Delia, the school record-holder in the 400 hurdles, won that event in 1:06.6 and also paired with Kelsey Fox, Caitlin Mills and Talia Burns to take the 4×100 in 52 seconds flat.
The Wildcats also claimed four of six events, starting with Delia’s top triple jump of 35’3”. Fox topped 6’6” in the pole vault, while Juliana Wong had a winning discus throw of 66’11” and Julia Logana tossed the shot put 27’1”. Phoebe White led F-M with wins in the 400 and 800-meter runs and taking part in two victorious relays.
Each of the Marcellus track teams would find success against Christian Brothers Academy, the girls rolling to a 96-45 victory over the Brothers to improve its league record to 4-0 and the boys routing CBA 126-12.
Four different field events had top-three Mustangs sweeps on the girls side. Mary Catherine Coon led one of them, tying Sydney French and Amy Francesconi by clearing 4’2” in the high jump, while Hannah Ryan cleared 7’6” in the pole vault ahead of Julianna Szczech and Courtney Otis, who each topped 7 feet.
Emma Stuart, in her sweep of throwing events, tossed the shot put 23’5” to edge Michaela Godbold (22’8 ½’) as Stuart threw the discus 76’2”, again with Godbold in the runner-up spot. Jayden Herr was third in the shot put and Sarah Jeske third in the discus.
On the oval, Morgan Gould took the 3,000-meter run in 12:37.5, with Alaura Cushman taking the 200 sprint in 30.7 seconds to Carolyn Carlic’s 30.8. Macie Szalach got the 400 hurdles in 1:20.8 to edge Corrine Bandera (1:21.3) as Liliana Cushman was second in the 1,500-meter run and Olivia Bird was second in the 800-meter run.
Marcellus took two of three relays, as Bird, Liliana Cushman, Crystal Silliman and Violet Moncavage went 13:06 flat in the 4×800 and, later in the meet, Bird, Moncavage, Silliman and Angelina VanCamp posted 5:02.0.
A boys race sweep for Marcellus began with Mike Provvidenti taking the 400 sprint in 55 seconds flat and the 200 in 24.1 seconds, with Nick Distefano winning the 100 in 11.8 seconds as Tom Hoey went 19.9 seconds in the 110 hurdles.
While Andy Marsh roared to victory in the 400 hurdles in 1:05.2, the Mustangs also handled the distance races as Matt Strempel won the 800 in 2:08.7, Joe Riccardi covered the mile in 4:58.7 and Braxton Knapp won the 3,200 in 12:47.3.
Also, the Mustangs won five of six field events. Caleb Wetherell had a top long jump of 19’2” and unleashed a winning triple jump of 40’3” as Sean Raymond cleared 5’8” in the high jump. Sam Stearns soared past 12 feet in the pole vault as Nate Murphy threw the discus 92’5 ½” to prevail.
