As part of a day-long series of contests between the two neighboring schools, the Jamesville-DeWitt and Fayetteville-Manlius boys lacrosse teams will take one each other this Saturday night at 6 p.m., just four days after the Hornets have a rematch with the West Genesee side it lost to on April 13.
In the lead-up to this week, both F-M and J-D earned a pair of wins, with the Hornets only stumbling Saturday in a narrow 9-8 defeat to reigning two-time state champion Victor (Section V) as it played on even terms with the Blue Devils most of the way.
F-M was held to one goal by Victor in the second quarter, and that made the ultimate difference. Luke Burnam still had three goals and one assist, with Donovan Welsh scoring twice. Tommy Ryu and Nick Papa each had one goal and one assist as Ryan Cicci added a goal and James Rettinger got an assist. Goalie Ryan Boshart finished with 10 saves.
Before that, F-M had to count on Welsh to carry them past Cicero-North Syracuse 8-5 last Tuesday at Bragman Stadium. Trailing 2-1 after one period, the Hornets grabbed the lead by halftime and eventually built a 7-3 margin by blanking the Northstars in the third quarter.
Welsh not only scored six of the eight goals, but assisted on the other two, by Rettinger and Cicci. Rettinger also had an assist as Boshart stopped nine of the 14 shots he faced. For C-NS, only Brian Rowe scored twice.
A much easier game followed on Thursday at Syracuse, the Hornets smashing the Cougars 21-3 as it only allowed goals in the second quarter and spent the rest of the game on a continual attack, opening 7-0 in the first quarter and adding on from there.
Welsh got to double digits in points with four goals and six assists, while Papa set a career mark with five goals. Burnam scored three times, with Ryu, Mac Fish and Tommy Farry each getting two goals. Cicci and Teddy Wells each had two assists as Cicci, Carson Yancey and Zak Van Valkenburgh earned single goals.
J-D rolled past Central Square 18-8 last Tuesday, but even that was a bit deceptive since J-D built a 16-2 halftime advantage on the Redhawks before easing up during the last two periods.
Ryan Archer amassed seven assists, his passes going to Griffin Cook, who scored six times, and Joe Kiesa, who had four goals. Andrew Barclay had one goal and one assist as Casey Platenik, Jack Mulvihill, Eric Antosh, Jai Benson and Brendan Drotar had one goal apiece.
Then, on Thursday, J-D plowed past Cortland 24-3, scoring nine times in the first quarter alone and then adding 10 more goals in the next two periods as Cook would eventually find the net seven times, adding an assist.
Kiesa had three goals and two assists, with Archer adding two goals and four assists. Mulvihill, Ryan Drotar and Jacob Risavi had two goals apiece as Platenik, Benson, Antosh, Kyle Hurley, Pat Murad and Adam Fontana managed single goals.
East Syracuse Minoa proved quite impressive in last Tuesday’s 17-7 win over Cortland, tearing through a decisive first half and not letting up until it had a 12-2 advantage on the Purple Tigers. Cruising through the rest of the game, the Spartans got a big effort from Derrek Madonna, who scored six times and added an assist.
Luke Rosaschi had three goals and two assists, with David Neff and Mark WIllette each finding the net twice. Lance Madonna, Dan Boland, Alex Kelsey and Alex Recor had one goal apiece, with Ryan MacCombie and Adam Caramanna joining Madonna in the assist column.
But when ESM faced unbeaten, state Class C no. 6-ranked Homer on Thursday night, the Spartans were quieted in a 12-6 defeat, unable to recover from a first quarter where the Trojans bolted out to a 6-2 advantage.
Only Boland scored twice for ESM as Neff, Rosaschi, Derrek Madonna and Lance Madonna had one goal apiece. Kelsey added an assist as Andrew Steigerwald recorded 11 saves. For Homer, Jake Riley, Vincent Basile and Tucker O’Donnell each got three goals, with Riley adding two assists. Dante Yacavone had two goals and two assists.
