It wasn’t just that the Fayetteville-Manlius girls golf team was again taking charge in the CNY Counties League. It was doing so while breaking records both on its home course and Green Lakes and at other venues, too.
To start its week, the Hornets took on Cicero-North Syracuse last Monday and prevailed, 165-188, over the Northstars. The 165 on the front nine at Northern Pines broke a team mark of 172 F-M had set one year ago.
Veterans Maggie Bonomo and Mackenzie Kingsley again were at the forefront as Bonomo shot a 38 for nine holes and Kingsley, who had missed the April 21 season opener at West Genesee, contributed a 39.
Nessa McKie posted C-NS’s low individual round of 42, but F-M pulled away behind matching rounds of 44 from Bailey Wallace and Justine Burness, which were ahead of the Northstars’ second-best individual, Morgan Siechen, who finished at 46.
When F-M returned home to Green Lakes for Wednesday’s match against Baldwinsville, it broke another mark, this time set by Auburn in 2014. The Maroons shot 172 on that day, but the Hornets beat it by two shots as it routed the Bees 170-242.
The six best individual scored belonged to F-M, starting with Bonomo’s 41 and continuing with Kingsley’s 42. Just behind them, Burness had a 43 and Grace Perry posted a 44 as Wallace gained a 48 and Liz Truman added a 54.
On Friday, F-M rolled again, beating West Genesee 172-212 at Green Lakes, just two shots off the record total it put up against B’ville. This time it was Kingsley shooting the low round of 41, and Burness finishing with a 43 as Perry shot her second consecutive 44, matching Bonomo’s total.
Meanwhile, East Syracuse Minoa’s Blue team won a four-team match last Monday at Arrowhead, beating its own ESM Orange side 215-263 while also topping Central Square, who finished at 231. Skaneateles also participated in this match.
Audrey Rivers shot a 46 to lead ESM Blue, tied with the Lakers’ Jenna Field and one shot ahead of Field’s teammate, Jillian Barker, but also five shots ahead of the Redhawks’ Emily Barnes.
Kaleigh Graves matched Barnes’ 51. Sarah Moran posted a 56, followed by Hannah Johnson (62) and Erica Garm (63). As for ESM Orange, Helaina Scolaro led the way with a 56, the same score as Moran, while Rachel Deyett had a 68.
When Jamesville-DeWitt returned to action at Butternut Creek last Tuesday against Auburn, it got to face the Maroons’ two-time reigning state individual champion, Lindsay May, up close, and May set a record, posting a nine-hole total of 27.
Yet the Red Rams still beat the Maroons 165-172 because the next-best Auburn individual, Marki Flurschutz, had a 45, while three J-D individuals topped that effort. Lena Jones, with a 37, led the way, while Alex Catanzarite shot a 41 and Kelli Palumbo had a season-best 43.
J-D followed up Wednesday by beating Central Square 153-177, also at Butternut Creek. Posting the four lowest individual rounds, the Rams had Jones shoot a 36, while Lizzie Redmore stepped up with a 38. Tracy Edson had a 39 and Zoe Pippens contributed a 40.
Only on Thursday did ESM Blue cool off, taking a 216-245 loss to Auburn. Rivers shot a 53, but May beat that score by 15 shots as she got a 38, backed by 52s from Alexandra and Marki Flurschutz. Moran shot a 62, two shots ahead of Garm.
Then, on Friday, ESM lost again, falling to Oswego 212-214 despite Rivers shooting the low individual round of 48 at Oswego Country Club. Johnson had a 53 and Moran a 54, with Garm contributing a 59. To lead the Buccaneers, Danielle Delconte had a 50 and Hailey Furlong got a 52, with Catherine Volkomer (54) and Nichole Delconte (56) close behind.
