Nick Stanton and Mike Capeling led the way for the Chittenango boys track and field team as it opened its 2017 season last Wednesday afternoon with a 74-67 victory over the Phoenix Firebirds.
Striking first in the 100-meter dash, Stanton edged Phoenix’s Jacob Hart, 12.0 seconds to 12.1, and in the 200-meter dash beat out the Firebirds’ Eli Clark, though both finished in 24.1 seconds, and won the high jump by going 19 feet 6 ¾ inches. Stanton also was second in the 400-meter dash in 53.9 seconds.
To start his day, Capeling claimed the mile in 4:52.7, with Ersilio Cerminaro close behind as he got second place in 4:58.1. Then Capeling went to the 3,200-meter run and took that race in 10:52.2, with Cerminaro third and Matt Morak second in 11:23.6.
The Bears went 1-2-3 in the shot put, Trevor Conklyn throwing it 37’1” ahead of Diego Prado (35’5 ½”) and Kyler Tessler (34’2”) as Prado would take the discus with a throw of 89’4” to beat Conklyn’s 86’7”.
Together, Dylan Price, Phillip Abell, Jacob Blaszkow and Brian Schermerhorn took the 4×800 relay in 9:01.2., though Phoenix won the other two. Devin Myers was second in the triple jump, going 37’7”, and Abell cleared 8’6” for second place in the pole vault as Lucas Spiridilozzi topped 5’2” for second place in the high jump.
Chittenango’s girls team had its own meet against Phoenix, but fell to the Firebirds 76-54. In the 100-meter hurdles, the Bears’ Kendra Moore (17.9 seconds) beat out Mia Morgillo (19.2 seconds) for the top spot. Morgillo did win the 400 hurdles in 1:20.8.
Chelsea Lamphere claimed the 1,500-meter run in 5:19 flat, with McKayla Capeling second in the 3,000-meter run in 12:29.0. Capeling also helped the Bears’ 4×800 relay team take first place in 11:20.0.
In field events, McKenzie Dahlin, who was third in the 400 sprint, prevailed in the triple jump with a top leap of 27’8 ¼”, just ahead of Alyssa Kolb (27’5 ½”), who got her own title in the long jump by going 13’8” as Emily Moon (13’3 ½”) was second.
Chittenango went to Bragman Stadium for Saturday’s Cicero-North Syracuse Relays, where the boys Bears picked up 15 points to finish ninth out of 14 teams, host C-NS taking the top spot with 99 points.
Conklyn and Prado got 10 of those points, rising to third place in the discus with best total throws of 198’4”, and they had combined throws of 75’6” in the shot put to finish fourth.
Capeling, Blasznow, Abell and Cerminaro were fourth in the mile relay, their times adding up to 19:35.61. Price, Moran, Schermerhorn and Nate Lampman got sixth place in the 4×800 in 9:24.14.
