Once again, the Baldwinsville wrestling team will make the trip to Cicero-North Syracuse for the Section III Dual Meet that takes place this Saturday, though the format differs from years past.
Instead of 16 teams in a single bracket, there will be Large School and Small School divisions, with the survivors in each bracket to meet at day’s end for the overall title. It’s a sneak preview to what will take place in 2018, when a new state team tournament will take place a week after the sectional Dual Meet.
In the meantime, B’ville had plenty of work to do, including last Wednesday night’s match at Syracuse’s Institute of Technology Central that included victories in every bout from 106 to 160 pounds that and three different one-point decisions that led to a 62-12 victory over the Eagles as the Bees stayed unbeaten in CNY Counties League matches.
Jeremy Pond, wrestling at 138 pounds, pinned Suarez Sampson in just 21 seconds, with Dominick Sposato (160 pounds) pinning Adramir Kenneh in 79 seconds. Zach Hahn (120 pounds) had his own first-period fall, though it took 1:45 to finish off Nazir Smith as Thor Sutphen (195 pounds) got a 45-second pin over Louis Ferrer.
At 126 pounds, Jake Naples pinned Jose Orocho 26 seconds into the second period. John Eustice (145 pounds) got a second-period fall over Mario Melendez as David Rush, at 152 pounds, put up a 16-1 technical fall over Salah Ali in less than five minutes.
Tyler Patrick found himself in an exciting match with ITC’s Keyshawn Howard at 132 pounds, but survived it to win a 10-9 decision. Mike Spicer, challenged at 285 pounds by Young Calvin, needed a single escape to prevail 1-0 as Dan Fawwaz (182 pounds) needed all six minutes to edge past Nahjir Dean 4-3.
Jacob Cavallo claimed a forfeit at 113 pounds, as did Cole Accordino at 106 pounds. Denis Krall, at 170 pounds, lost, 7-3, to Abendigo Johnson as Gunnar Hunt (220 pounds) took a 12-5 defeat to Jerome Davis.
