If the Chittenango girls volleyball team wanted to stay atop the Onondaga High School League standings, one opponent, in particular, had to be vanquished.
The Bears visited East Syracuse Minoa last Wednesday night, each of them sporting 3-1 overall records and with first place in the league at stake, and with a steady and consistent performance, Chittenango prevailed in a three-set sweep.
Once it won the first set 25-19, the Bears maintained that momentum in each of the next two sets, decided by similar margins as Chittenango claimed the second set 25-16 and closed out the sweep, 25-18, in the third.
Megan Mayer and Tyla Cutrie each put up 11 kills to lead the Bears’ frone line, and Mayer add seven digs in front of Shelby Maring, who had 18 assists, and Tiffany Scofield, who added 13 assists. Alyssa Bates had five kills and nine digs as Mya Streiff earned 14 digs. Sydney Pellman added three kills.
On ESM’s side, Isabella Talarico worked her total to 24 assists, passing it to a well-balanced front line where McCarthy got nine kills, Aubrey Williams six kills and Kailyn Boland six kills, with Zacharek adding four kills. Claire Marin got seven digs, just ahead of Samantha Wysoki and Arrica Williams, who earned six digs apiece.
Tuning up for ESM, the Bears hosted Faith Heritage last Monday night, and it proved one-sided, Chittenango taking less than an hour to sweep the Saints by scores of 25-11, 25-4 and 25-10.
Nine of the Bears’ 21 aces came from Maring, who also recorded a team-best 11 assists. Scofield managed 10 assists as Cutrie got three aces to go with eight kills and Mayer earned nine kills. Streiff gained five aces and Bates finished with four aces.
