In terms of local bragging rights, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls swim team now have them, having earned it at the expense of its long-established neighbors from Jamesville-DeWitt.
The two sides clashed Monday night at Cazenovia College, and though the Red Rams won most of the individual races, plus two of three relays, the Hornets, with its superior depth, still managed to win by a 100-86 margin.
At two crucial moments, F-M got the advantage. During the 200-yard medley relay that started the meet, the Hornets’ quartet of Hannah Kellog, Grace Bang, Cara Campell and Addie Antshel finished in two minutes, 3.12 seconds and prevailed.
Even more important was F-M’s 1-2-3 sweep of the diving competition. Erin Wind won it, earning 220.76 points to fend off teammate Riley Miller, who had 217.84 points. The Hornets Francesca Femia earned third place with 206.54 points.
Right before that, Campell, in 26.55 seconds, held off J-D’s Emma Galletta (26.74 seconds) in the 50 freestyle, with Abbey Harris (26.80 seconds) third for F-M. The Hornets then watched J-D win the next five races before Bang clinched matters by taking the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.39 over J-D’s Jordan Archer (1;18.70) and Mackenzie Moore (1:19.03).
Even as the Rams were winning races, though, the Hornets were gathering up points, starting with Maya Hrosar (2:14.16) and Michelle Sipple (2:15.71) going second and third, respectively, in the 200 freestyle just as Kellog (2:30.72) and Catherine Ottaviano (2:31.46) did the same in the 200 individual medley.
Harris got second place in the 100 freestyle in 58.27 seconds, with Amelia Krouse (59.56 seconds) third. Ottaviano (6:00.23) held off Hrosar (6:01.37) for second place in the 500 freestyle as Christina Burnam finished second in the 100 backstroke in 1:09.09.
J-D saw Marissa Potamianos win the 200 freestyle (2:10.72) and take first in the 500 freestyle (5:47.03), while Alexis Phillips got a win in the 200 IM in 2:25.70 before prevailing in the 100 freestyle in 57.98 seconds. Amelia Hesler won the 100 butterfly in 1:03.37 and rolled to a win in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.61.
In the 200 freestyle relay, Hesler, Phillips, Potamianos and Galletta got first place in 1:46.22, with that same quartet returning to finish off the night with a winning time of 3:51.92 in the 400 freestyle relay.
