The Marcellus girls volleyball proved quite impressive in last Tuesday’s match against Phoenix, where it won each of the first two sets by equal 25-14 margins and then rolled through the third set 25-6 to complete the sweep.
Despite the brevity of the match, Olivia Quick still managed 28 assists, with her passes going to Margaret Kianka, who got 10 kills and three aces. Meghan O’Brien had six kills, while Emily Welch recorded three aces and joined Katherine Sauro as they each earned four kills. Lauren Young and Sydney French earned three kills apiece and Rachel Randall earned 11 digs, with Julia Piorkowski gaining four digs.
Against Bishop Grimes Thursday night, the Mustangs swept the Cobras 25-12, 25-14, 25-17, improving its record to 9-5 as Quick recorded 16 assists and Piorkowski earned five aces. Randall added eight digs as Kianka (four kills) and Young (three kills) led the front line and Sauro got four aces.
Bishop Ludden found success in last Tuesday’s match against Institute of Technology Central, handling the first set 25-10 and then sweeping the Eagles by winning the next two sets by equal 25-14 margins.
A full set of points (25) was earned through aces, mostly by Bridget Brogan, who amassed 10 aces, and Natalie Fagan, who had eight aces to go with her nine assists. Aurora Deshaies added four aces, plus four kills and two blocks, with Sarah Smith getting two aces and Kari Plumridge adding three assists. Mary Patrick had four kills.
Ludden then took its 6-6 record to Solvay Thursday night for the “Dig Pink” event, held throughout the Section III ranks, to promote Breast Cancer Awareness month. The Bearcats won the first two sets 25-20 and 25-10, and recovered from dropping the third set 25-22 to finish off the Gaelic Knights 25-22 in the fourth.
Mackenzie McCarthy led Solvay with 26 assists, with Allie Posnick adding eight assists. Taylor Preble added 12 digs and four aces as, up front, Bella Petralito got 14 kills and Brielle Bagozzi eight kills, plus six aces. Anna Rolince and Ashley Bosco had five kills apiece and Phebe Guadagnolo added seven digs.
On Ludden’s side, Fagan and Plumridge both earned six assists, with Deshaies getting four kills as Brogan had 16 digs to go with three kills. Wilkinson had 13 digs and Fagan seven digs as Nicole Noreault earned three kills.
Solvay had swept Altmar-Parish Williamstown last Tuesday, getting through a 27-25 third set after claiming the first two sets 25-19 and 25-18. Aside from her 12 kills, Bagozzi put up eight aces as McCarthy produced 19 assists and four digs.
Petralito mixed in seven kills and 12 digs, with Bosco adding five kills and Lauren Nichols three kills and three blocks. Posnick helped McCarthy on the back line with six assists as Preble gained 13 digs, to go with three assists and two aces. Rolince (three kills, two aces) and Guadaganolo (two aces, four digs) helped out, too.
Ludden prevailed Friday in five sets over Altmar-Parish-Williamstown, a match where, after it won the opener 25-22, the Gaelic Knights dropped the next two sets 25-19 and 25-23, only to pull out the fourth set 25-19 and finish off the Rebels 25-14 in the final set.
Deshaies finished with 11 kills, just ahead of Noreault’s total of nine kills. Brogan piled up 18 digs, adding four kills and three aces as Fagan earned 12 assists and five aces. Josie Towne contributed five digs.
