Well past the midway point of their respective regular-season schedules, the Jamesville-DeWitt and Fayetteville-Manlius girls swim teams lead in their respective leagues, and neither of them has lost a meet.
J-D kept it going in Wednesday’s clash with Oswego, improving to 8-0 by again having Amelia Hesler win a pair of races and the rest of the Red Rams follow suit in a 102-84 victory over the Buccaneers.
Hesler, in two minutes, 19.17 seconds, was first in the 200-yard individual medley over Sawyer Parker (2:34.50), and then would blaze to a time of 1:04.88 in the 100 backstroke, also helping Parker, Mackenzie Moore and Alyssa Philips win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:48.50. Parker also was second in the 100 freestyle.
Phillips, who was second (26.83 seconds) to Oswego’s Caitlin Gorton (25.56 seconds) in the 50 freestyle, would rebound by winning the 500 freestyle in 5:40.22. Marissa Potamianos needed 2:06.44 to pull away and take the 200 freestyle, while Jordan Archer took the 100 breaststroke in 1:20.93.
In the diving competition, J-D’s Megan Alkins won with 199.64 points over the Bucs’ Libby Rookey (189.9 points) and Laura Bornheimer (188.4 points), while J-D closed out the meet by having Phillips, Hesler, Potamianos and Emma Galletta get first place in the 400 freestyle relay in 3;53.40.
While this was going on, F-M was hosting the combined Syracuse City team at Cazenovia College and pulling away for a comfortable 100-74 victory, getting started when Addie Antshel, Grace Bang, Cara Campell and Caitlin Rameas claimed the 200 medley relay in a clocking of 2:06.38.
Campbell went from there to edging teammate Mary Lux, 59.62 seconds to 59.80, in the 100 freestyle, with Lux having already won the 50 freestyle in 27.22 seconds. Antshel, in 1:09.74, led a 1-2-3 sweep of the 100 backstroke with Mairead Egan (1:11.22) and Saya Hrosar (1:11.55).
Catherine Ottaviano won the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.85, just ahead of Rameas (1:19.35), while Abbey Harris won the 200 freestyle in 2:08.31 over Hannah McMichael (2:20.63) and Hannah Kellog claimed the 200 IM in 2:27.88 as Michelle Sipple (2;33.21) finished second.
Riley Miller earned 230.05 points on the diving board, with Francesca Femia (221.65 points) close behind. Harris, Kellog, Lux and Amelia Krouse paired up as F-M swam the 200 freestyle relay in a swift 1:47.78 as McMichael, Lux, Kellog and Adele Caputo went 4:14.45 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Also on Wednesday night, Christian Brothers Academy paid a visit to Liverpool, but did not have the same success that F-M did earlier this season, falling 99-87 to the Warriors.
Things started well when Julia Torell, Tessa Queri, Lauren Kelly and Darien Tompkins beat Liverpool, 1:57.61 to 1:58.47, in a quick 200 medley relay, and Torell wasn’t done, going 2:09.10 to hold off Maddie Rose (2:11.96) in the 200 freestyle and pulling away to win the 100 butterfly in 1:02.47.
Tompkins was victorious in the 100 backstroke in 1:08.71 after Queri went 25.56 seconds to win the 50 freestyle. But Liverpool won every other event, with Kelly second in the 200 freestyle and Abbey Poore second in the 500 freestyle. Sydney Sovinsky led the Warriors with wins in the 200 IM (2:16.14) and 100 freestyle (54.98 seconds).
