Continuing to build yet another strong regular-season resume, the West Genesee girls tennis team added to its win total last Wednesday by putting together a 5-2 victory over the Liverpool Warriors.
The Wildcats won two of three singles matches. Mikayla Mannara nearly blanked Julie Schewe in first singles, taking it 6-1, 6-0 as Danielle Bertelli beat Annie Trang 6-2, 6-3 to negate Thi Tran’s 6-1, 6-4 defeat to Erin Chambrone.
WG handled Liverpool in three of four doubles matches, beginning with Lauren Ferris and Katie Viau topping Eleni Ioannidis and Giana Lavalle 6-1, 6-3 as Angelina Llanos and Natalie Thurston beat Valerie Morgans and Julie Nguyen 6-2, 6-4.
Meghan Mello and Andrea Wierbinski had a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Megan Blake and Katelyn Nguyen in first doubles, but in fourth doubles Anastasia Mello and Phoebe Nelson made up for it, getting a 6-3, 6-3 win over Diana Kozenyatko and Gabby Underwood.
The Wildcats followed up Friday with a 7-0 shutout of Syracuse West, though Anastasia Mello needed three sets in singles to beat Kelsey Lent-Moore 6-2, 5-7, 6-0. Wierbinski topped Kayla Pagano 6-4, 6-2, with Bertelli beating Kyaw Kyaw 6-2, 6-3.
In the closest doubles matches, Ferris, now paired with Meghan Mello, won, 6-4, 6-2, over Tram La and Amy Nguyen, with Llanos and Thurston handling Ana McGough and Samiya Musa 6-0, 6-4. The team of Mannara-Viau and Cameron Chawgo-Andrea Andreeva also won in two sets.
Going head-to-head last Wednesday, Marcellus shut out Jordan-Elbridge 7-0, watching as the singles trio of Courtney Otis, Caroline Keegan and Marcy Gosson did not lose more than three games in any single set they played.
On the doubles side, the Mustangs’ Abby Vetsch and Maddie Conklin beat Miranda and Theresa Malvaso 6-2, 6-4. Hannah Tarolli and Micah Mixon won, 6-2, 6-3, over Marissa Malvaso and Amelia Younis, with the teams of Grace Vensel-Anna Canny and Allison Clancy-Alyssa Goodwin not losing more than two games in any set of their matches.
Marcellus also blanked Pulaski 7-0 on Friday, with Keegan battling past Delilah Mehallow 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 in second singles as Otis beat Cerenity Geer 6-3, 6-2 and Gosson routed Casey Lyne 6-1, 6-0. The doubles teams of Conklin-Vetsch, Tarolli-Mixon, Vensel-Canny and Clancy-Goodwin also recorded straight-set victories.
Westhill would get lots of help from forfeits in last Monday’s 7-0 shutout over Bishop Grimes, but still had to work hard in two of the three singles matches after Katherine Missert’s 6-0, 6-0 romp over Liz Wolaver.
Going to three sets, Giavanna Buccina worked past the Cobras’ Rachel Christie 6-4, 2-6, 6-0, while Kaleigh Danaher met Katie Knittel and, after winning the first set 6-4, dropped the second set 6-4 before claiming the final set 6-3.
The Warriors would prevail again on Wednesday, handling East Syracuse Minoa 6-1. With Missert falling to the Spartans’ Kim Pham 6-3, 6-2, Westhill still got singles points from Buccina and Danaher as they each won 6-0, 6-2 matches over, respectively, Ellie Huard and Amber Unislawski.
All four doubles matches were played, and Westhill won them, the teams of Abbey Mullen-Lydia Stevenson, Grace Lesselroth-Katie Lesselroth, Elizabeth Megnucci-Madelyn Sherlock and Cami Cortez-Zoe Hynes all prevailing in two sets. The Lesselroths had the toughest match, beating Emily Moziak and Robin Walters 6-4, 6-3.
