Fresh off another Section III Division I championship run in 2015, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys volleyball team already is showing that it has every intention to go to the top again.
In the Northstars’ season opener at Jamesville-DeWitt last Wednesday night, it blitzed through the first two sets by 25-7 and 25-12 margin, slowing down a bit in the third set, but still completing the sweep 25-19.
Connor Millias and Trevor Caviness both return this fall, and in the opener Millias saw most of his 19 assists end up in points by Caviness, who earned 10 kills. Tristen Cummings helped on the back line with seven assists as Trent Caviness added five digs and three aces.
David Delaney picked up five kills, with Robert Patzer contributing four kills, three digs, two aces and two assists. Josh Bigford led C-NS with six aces to go with his three kills.
As this went on, Liverpool opened at home against last season’s other sectional finalist, Baldwinsville. It proved an exciting match with three closely-played sets, but the Warriors lost each of them by the exact same 25-21 margin.
This happened even though Frank Constantine gave Liverpool 17 kills and Trevor Morrow contributed seven kills. Will Karins finished with 16 assists. Cooper Chaffee had four kills and three blocks as David Abraham paced the Bees with 24 assists.
In girls volleyball, C-NS and Liverpool both would play on Friday, and both would win in three-set sweeps, the Northstars taking out Fayetteville-Manlius and the Warriors doing the same to Corcoran.
C-NS had to go through close opening sets, but still won, 25-23, 27-25, 25-19 over F-M as Jessica Barry, with 20 assists and six digs, did superb work on the back line to pace the Northstars.
Olivia Johnson had a team-best nine kills, with Savannah Ciciarelli gaining 11 digs to go with her five kills. Olivia Salvador and Corrine Rutkowski got three aces apiece as Madelyn Murry and Kim Barry each posted three kills.
