Abby Gugel led the Jordan-Elbridge girls track and field team as it contended for the Section III Class B-2 championship Thursday at Clinton High School.
To start her effort, Gugel went to the 1,500-meter run and, in four minutes, 56.59 seconds, beat the field by more than seven seconds. Emma Burns was sixth in 5:41.79. In the 3,000-meter run, Gugel won again, in 10:39.09, with Madison Daly fourth in 12:05.32 and Mary Elizabeth Dristle sixth in 12:49.42.
Going for three wins in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, Gugel reached that summit, needing 7:49.8 to top a field that saw Burns finish third in 8:17 flat and Dristle take sixth place in 8:47.1.
Gugel, paired with Emma Burns, Madison Daly and Mary Elizabeth Dristle, finished second in the 4×800 relay in 10:05.77, just behind Lowville, who won in 10:02.95. Burns was eighth in the 800-meter run in 2:37.54, with Theresa Dristle ninth in 2:43.69.
Ultimately, the Eagles earned 107 points, just behind runner-up Hannibal (113.5 points) and finishing third, while the host Clinton Warriors, with 181 points, prevailed.
Specializing in the sprints, Julie Hines won the 200-meter dash in 27.46 seconds ahead of Hannibal’s Kiersten Abbott (27.90 seconds) as Emily Klock got fourth place in 28.24 seconds and Ashlee Eaton (29.68 seconds) was eighth.
Hines also was second in the 100-meter dash in 13.14 seconds, just behind Hannibal’s Tayler Dence, who won in 13.02 seconds, and took second place in the 400-meter dash in 1:03.20 behind Hannibal’s Alexis Cole (1:01.68) as Madi Hatt was seventh.
Fallon was third in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.02 seconds and fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:14.39 as she helped Hatt, Klock and Ashlee Eaton get second place (52.58 seconds), just behind Canastota (52.06 seconds), in the 4×100 relay. Klock took fifth in the 400 hurdles in 1:16.73 and paired with Hines, Hatt and Theresa Dristle to finish fourth (4:28.32) in the 4×400.
Two J-E girls took part in the five-event pentathlon, with Megan Jackson getting to fifth place with 1,246 points and Natalyn Walts (1,198 points) finishing eighth.
Meanwhile, in the boys sectional B-2 meet, J-E had 59 points to finish fifth in an eight-team field. Clinton won here, too, with 143 points to fend off Altmar-Parish-Williamstown (125 points) at the top.
The Eagles were 1-2 in the 400 sprint, where Russell Hines won in 51.65 seconds, nearly half a second ahead of Ethan Kinney, who got 52.14 seconds and later finished third in the 200 in 24.07 seconds.
J-E also won the 4×100, seeing Kinney, Russell Hines, Anthony Ortiz and Marion Quigley go 46.25 seconds to edge Clinton (46.35 seconds) at the line. Later, in the 4×400, Ortiz, Hines, Ethan Kinney and Pat Fordyce were second in 3:36.51 to APW’s 3:33.26.
Brad Marshall also was fifth in the shot put, heaving it 38’6 ½”, while Austin Cassick had a seventh-place discus throw of 96’9”. Quigley took 10th place in the long jump, going 18’2 ½”.
Brendan Bourque, Dan Jorolemon, Nick Sherman and Logan Kinney were fifth in the 4×800 in 9:32.67. Nathan Jennings was fifth in the pentathlon, earning 1,490 points. Hugh Schader got seventh place in the mile in 5:27.26 as Bourque (11:40.4) and Sherman (11:44 flat) were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
