Going into the week with a 6-2 record, the Marcellus girls golf team improved on that and beat a long-time rival last Monday afternoon when it defeated the Skaneateles Lakers 211-229, setting up a week where the Mustangs did not lose against four different foes.
Playing at Skaneateles Country Club, Mary Colella and Erin Hass both shot 51, just ahead of Hannah Abbot, who had a 52. Their combined work help the Mustangs pull away despite a 53 shot by Jillian Barker, who led Skaneateles.
When Westhill faced Skaneateles last Tuesday, it was part of a three-team match at Butternut Creek where OHSL-leading Jamesville-DeWitt hosted. With a team score of 171, the Warriors found itself behind both the Lakers (165) and Red Rams, who won with 157.
Westhill’s Shannon Bunce did battle for individual honors and finished with a 38, beaten only by J-D’s Lena Jones, who had a 36. Gabbi LoCourto added a 41, though J-D’s MaryKate Scheftic (39) and Lizzie Redmore (40) topped those marks and Jenna Field led Skaneateles with a 39.
In Wednesday’s matches, Marcellus went to Greenview and beat Central Square 217-228. Colella put up a 48, the best individual round by six strokes, while Abbot had a 54 and Hass matched the Redhawks’ Maddie Haley, both of them finishing with 55. Kendall Koloski stepped up with a 60.
Then the Mustangs shot 205 to win a three-team match Thursday against Cazenovia (225) and Oswego (238) to improve its record to 10-2. Colella had a 44 to win the individual race by four shots over Abbot and the Lakers’ Erin Howles (48), while Hass, with a 55, and Elise LaBombard, who had a 58, added to the effort.
Meanwhile, Westhill broke out of its skid at home with a close 189-192 victory over Skaneateles.
Bunce shot a 43 to beat the Lakers’ Jillian Barker (45) for individual honors, but it took LoCourto and Gabby Stevenson both shooting 48, plus matching 51 totals from Madeleine Jones and Ellie Masterpole, to hang on against the trio of 49s shot by Field, Karah Blair and Breanna Sisson for Skaneateles.
West Genesee started its week at home, facing Liverpool last Monday afternoon, unable to keep up with the Warriors in a 194-211 defeat.
Mikki Riley, shooting a 48 at Westvale, led the Wildcats, but trailed Liverpool’s sister tandem of Mia Avotins, who shot a 42, and Natalya Avotins, who finished with a 44. Juliana Burns finished with a 52, the same as the Warriors’ Mia Latifagic.
Three days later, at Timber Banks, WG lost, 210-241, to Baldwinsville, who gained its first match win of the season behind a 48 from Jordyn Fofi and steady team play behind her. No one on the Wildcats topped Riley’s total of 55.
