At no other time this spring would the Baldwinsville track and field teams engage in so many events in so short an amount of time.
This had started back on April 28, when B’ville lost a pair of meets to Cicero-North Syracuse at Bragman Stadium, with the boys battling hard in a 76-65 defeat to the Northstars and the girls falling by an 88-53 margin.
In the closer boys meet, Greg Porceng edged Kieran Sheridan, 51.30 seconds to 51.63, to win the 400-meter dash, but the Bees earned most of its points in field events.
Austin Catalano had a top long jump of 20 feet 3 ¾ inches, and also won the triple jump, going 41’4”. Griffin Lynch soared past 11’6” to prevail in the pole vault as Alex Garcia threw the shot put 41’4” and Judson Fletcher won the discus with a heave of 109 feet.
B’ville took one of the three relays, seeing Evan Donhauser, Jack Buis, Sam Mahar and Brandon Brown get first place in the 4×100 in 44.51 seconds. C-NS got two wins apiece on the oval from Andrew Bearkland in the mile and 800-meter run, and Ed Mahana in the 110 and 400 hurdles. Bearkland edged Evan Vannatta, 2:01.77 to 2:02.16, in the 800.
In the girls meet, Kelley Hull still won the 1,500-meter run in 5:00.40 and added an 800-meter victory in 2:26.92, with Justus Holden-Betts completing a sweep of the distance races by claiming the 3,000-meter run in 10:56.90.
Shylea Dukat took the 400 hurdles, edging C-NS’s Abby Szumloz, 1:12.44 to 1:12.75, while Julia Davis won the 400 sprint in 1:02.13. Hayleigh Jaquint went 32’4” for first place in the triple jump as Jordyn Boutilier earned a winning long jump of 15’2”.
The big event came last Monday with a three-way meet against Liverpool and West Genesee in Camillus, partially made up from an April 26 rainout. Here, the boys Bees got a split, beating the Wildcats 101-40, but falling to the Warriors 77-64.
Mahar claimed two sprints, running the 100 in 11.34 seconds and the 200 in 23.09 seconds, while Donhauser took the 110 hurdles in 15.60 seconds and Ken Stehle needed exactly 1:10 to get first place in the 400 hurdles. Liverpool countered by sweeping all three relays to pick up valuable points.
Lynch again topped 11’6” in the pole vault, with Catalano going 19’6” to win the long jump. Garcia earned another victory in the shot put with a throw of 41’10”, half a foot better then he did against C-NS, with Kevin Starr clearing 5’5” in the high jump.
In the girls meet, B’ville lost 82-55 to West Genesee and 92-49 to Liverpool, winning just one individual event – the high jump, where Adrianna Straughter was the only competitor to clear 5 feet. The Warriors’ Alexis Bittel led her sides with wins in the 100 hurdles and long jump, with the Wildcats’ Carly Benson taking the 800 and 400 hurdles.
B’ville had far more success on Wednesday, sweeping Henninger as the girls prevailed 118-18 and the boys rolled past the Black Knights 104-37.
Straughter, going 17.2 seconds in the 100 hurdles, set the early tone in the sprints, where Christina Bartelli went exactly 28 seconds in the 200 and Courtney Clute went 1:07.5 in the 400 sprint. Dukat took the 400 hurdles in 1:13.4.
Meanwhile, in distance races, Justus Holden-Betts won twice, taking the 800 in 2:41 and going 12:47.0 in the 3,000 as Hull won the 1,500. Jaquint had a top triple jump of 33’4 ½” as Kaitlynn Asditt threw the discus 81’8” and Anna Miller won the shot put with a throw of 27’6”.
In a sweep of the 4×100 (54.1 seconds), 4×400 (4;54.0) and 4×800 (11:45.0) relays, the Bees saw Holden-Betts, Boutillier, Mia Bolton, Hannah Klaben, Kathryn Weaver, Katherine Siddall, Patricia Conlan, Madison Dickter, Nadine Dickter and Sarah Rodman all run legs.
B’ville’s boys team claimed all three distance races against Henninger. Ryan DeLola ran the mile in 4:48 flat, with Ben Timmons going 2:12.1 in the 800 and Andrew VanSlyke gaining victory in the 3,200 in 11:10.3.
In the sprints, Mahar went 11.4 seconds in the 100 and Greg Porceng claimed the 200 in 23.8 seconds, while Kieran Sheridan went 53.2 seconds in the 400. Stehle added a 400 hurdles victory in 1:03.3 as Donhauser roared through the 110 hurdles in 15.8 seconds.
Catalano, in the long jump, went 19’1” to prevail, while Fletcher threw the discus 111’3” and Gabe Horan tossed the shot put 44’5 ½”. Broc Augustus, Jonathan Formoza, Michael Lawrence and Mike Morris took the 4×400 relay in 3:51.3 as Augustus, Conor McManus, Joe Licameli and Anthony DelVecchio took the 4×800 in 9:54.9.
Once done there, B’ville’s boys would go to Friday’s New Hartford Invitational and rise up to second place in the 22-team field with 71 points, beating Liverpool (63 points) for that spot. Only C-NS, with 118 points, did better.
Sheridan provided a victory in the 400 sprint, going 51.44 seconds to pull away from Liverpool’s Mike Mahan (52.17 seconds) and the field. Sheridan, paired with Porceng, Vannatta and Tyler Luciano, went 3:35.32 in the 4×400 for third place.
In the 4×800, Vannatta and Denis Keegan joined Ethan Craig and Ryan Delola as they finished in 8:25.54 and got second place, though well back of Liverpool’s 8:04.55. Craig was sixth in the 800 in 2:05.70, with Delola fifth in the 3,200-meter run in 9:59.91.
Again clearing 11’6” in the pole vault, Lynch took third place as Sauquoit Valley’s Steve Philpotts won, clearing 12’6”. Catalano went 20 feet in the long jump for third place as Brown, going 19’9 ¼”, finished fourth. In the triple jump, Catalano was sixth, going 39’8 ¼” as Horan was fifth (44’6”) in the shot put.
Donhauser got third place in the 110 hurdles in 15.76 seconds, with Stehle getting to fourth place in the 100 hurdles in 1:00.58. In the 4×100, Donhauser, Mahar, Brown and Buis gained third place in 45.78 seconds, with Alex Henwood joining Mahar, Donhauser and Buis in a fourth-place 4×200 relay in 1:35.41.
Though the fastest preliminary qualifier in the 100 sprint in 11.23 seconds, Mahar could not quite match that in the ensuing rounds and finished fourth in the final in 11.48 seconds. The Bees took sixth in the 1,600 sprint medley relay (3:59.12) and distance medley relay (11:46.87).
