BALDWINSVILLE — September is National Senior Center Month, and what better way to celebrate than to hit the links for Canton Woods Senior Center?
Canton Woods will hold its inaugural golf outing Monday, Sept. 12, at Hickory Hill Golf Course on Route 31.
“We thought it was something the seniors could enjoy as well as the community,” said Evelyn Nelson, golf outing committee chair. “We kept the pricing down so as many of our seniors can play too.”
Registration is $50 per person for the captain-and-crew tournament. The price includes 18 holes, golf cart and luncheon.
The event will also feature prizes for the best rounds of golf, a 50/50 drawing and raffle prizes. Area businesses have been generous with hole sponsorships and donations.
“It’s amazing how people are so good about donating stuff in Baldwinsville. It’s such a treat,” Nelson said. “I head up the wreath sale and we double [our sales] every year.”
Nelson said event organizers are hoping to start a new tradition with the golf outing.
“We want to make it an annual event,” she said.
The 2023 event will be held in the spring. This year, the committee organized a fall event to avoid the summer heat. According to the National Institute on Aging, older people are at higher risk of heat-related illness.
In addition to benefiting Canton Woods, the golf tournament is an opportunity for area seniors to engage in physical activity and socialize with others. The National Institute on Aging says seniors who maintain an active lifestyle live longer, have fewer memory problems, reduce their risk of health issues, and are happier and more resilient than those who are socially isolated.
Nelson said the center has already had several people sign up for the golf tournament.
“It’s already a success, but the more golfers we can get [by] word of mouth, hopefully we can grow it even bigger for next year,” she said.
The registration deadline for the Canton Woods Golf Outing is Sunday, Sept. 4. To register, call the center at 315-638-4536.
